Nuclear Thermal rockets can take you there in 45 days , total "to and fro" trip time would be around 6 months....but yes, as you have said we have to build a spacestation like spacecraft, the same spacecraft can be used for manned moon missions as well as, if we can set up a lunar base to extract water ,then manned missions to Mars & moon would become substantially cheapYou have to Build a orbital space station gradually on Earth's orbit, then propel it towards Mars
It will enter Mars' orbit, a crewed ascender of 5 and another carrying science and engineering stuff can land, set up Pressurised cabins and solar farms etc
Spend a week or two there and come back to orbit and dock with the space station in Martian orbit, which will begin its journey towards earth
The entire round trip will take 3 years, maybe a year and a half more if one idiot gets left behind.
