only viable nuclear engine is a fusion engine. The west also has plans for the same. India is lowkey Tokamak researcher that many people don't know. see SST-1. but the west is also looking into fission powered rockets which is totally garbage. India should not look that way.
Nuclear Thermal Rockets can increase lsp significantly & increase payload fraction. Even more radical way would be to use Orion style Nuclear pulse propulsion.

how does nuclear pulse engine provide thrust in the vacuum of space and with very little mass to eject out? To get any meaningful thrust you still need to carry mass with you to get that thrust from the ejection of mass at high velocity

I had the same doubt.. apparently the bomb itself includes the reaction mass.

what do you mean science fiction?
Thorium-232 is the only naturally occurring isotope of thorium, is a fissionable material but not a fissile one, meaning that it needs high-energy neutrons to undergo fission splitting of atomic nuclei which releases energy that is used for electricity generation. However, when irradiated, thorium-232 undergoes a series of nuclear reactions, eventually forming uranium-233, a fissile material that can be burned up as fuel in nuclear reactors.

So, nope!
Direct nuclear powered space rockets are science fiction for now.

apparently most of the force of explosion 💥 is focused like a nuclear shaped charge onto a pusher plate .Most of the mass of nuclear pulse unit is remass .

That's not enough because most of the energy gets converted into intense light rays such as x-rays or gamma rays and they do not produce thrust. They would work in the atmosphere because those light rays would transfer heat to the air molecule and create motion, hence thrust.
