India one step closer to getting US-made MQ-9B drones: Why these Predator drones are such a big deal
If all goes as planned, India will soon possess 30 MQ-9B Predator armed drones, cranking up its surveillance apparatus along the frontier with China as well as in the Indian Ocean region.

According to reports, sources in the know said that India is in “advanced stages” of negotiations with the United States to procure the Predator armed drones for over $3 billion.

In fact, Vivek Lall, the chief executive for Global Atomics Global Corporation, the firm behind the drones, told PTI that the programme is at an advanced stage of discussions between the two governments. “We understand that the MQ-9B acquisition programme is at an advanced stage of discussion between the US and Indian governments,” he was quoted as saying to news agency PTI.

he deal was also reportedly discussed in the fourth two-plus-two foreign and defence ministerial dialogue between India and the US in Washington in April.

As the buzz around these armed drones gets louder, let’s find out what these are all about.

All about the Predator drones

The MQ-9B drone is the first hunter-killer unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed for long-endurance and high-altitude surveillance.

The Reaper has a 950-shaft-horsepower (712 kW) turboprop engine, allowing it to carry 15 times more ordnance payload and cruise at about three times the speed of its predecessor.

The craft can be flown for over 27 hours in the air at a maximum altitude of 50,000 feet.

According to defence contractors General Atomics, the drones possess the capabilities to be used for long-endurance intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions over a wide-area. Easy configuration of the drone makes it easier to operate the aircraft during missions.

The Predator drones have a long history. They were conceived in the early 1990s for aerial reconnaissance and forward observation roles after the failure of the GNAT 750 in operations over Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1993 and 1994. By 1995, the RQ-1 Predator became more commonly used and was used in combat in the US war in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, the 2011 Libyan civil war, and the 2014 intervention in Syria.

In 1999, the United States Air Force wanted a more advanced version of the RQ-1 Predator and so so General Atomics began work on the Predator B, which entered operations in 2007 as the MQ-9 Reaper.

Today, MQ-9B has two variants – SkyGuardian and SeaGuardian. The latter is fitted with special equipment intended for maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare.

Who else uses these drones?

The US Air Force extensively uses the MQ-9 drones and it has been reported that most recently the Americans used the drone to fire the Hellfire R9X missile that killed the leader of Al-Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri in Afghanistan’s Kabul.

Besides this, it has been reported that the MQ-9 Reaper was used in the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani outside the Baghdad airport in January 2020. Soleimani was the top commander of Iran’s paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and headed its elite Quds Force. He was in-charge of operations in the Middle East.

India’s deal for the drones

India has long been wanting to purchase the Predator drones and the deal first took root while Donald Trump was in power in America in 2017. In 2017, when Narendra Modi had visited the US, the two heads had discussed the deal.

However, that deal didn’t materialise at all.

In March 2021, it was announced that the Indian Navy, Army and Air Force would finally jointly procure 30 armed versions of the American unmanned aerial system in a $3-billion deal.

Why does India want these drones?

The addition of the Predator drones in the Indian arsenal is important as the nation continues to have strained relations with two of its neighbours — Pakistan and China.

The need for this weaponry became even more prominent after the skirmishes between Indian and Chinese forces at the border in 2020.

In fact, India has considerably stepped up its surveillance along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) using a fleet of unmanned drones and the addition of the MQ-9B drones from the US would be a big upgrade in its monitoring programme.

Moreover, the Indian Navy wants to be able to keep an eye on the movements of Chinese warships and submarines in the Indian Ocean and these drones would be just perfect for the task.

China’s increasing naval activity in the Indian Ocean Region, including the docking of the Yuan Wang 5 ship in Sri Lanka, makes the need for the Reaper drone even more significant for India.

Killer and Surveillance Drones for India.

India is once again behind in acquiring Predator/Attack drones. Pakistan has acquired the Turkish Bayarktar 2 UAVs. It’s 40 personnel have already been trained in Turkey in its operation and maintenance. Two years back Pakistanis had acquired Chinese Wing Loong drones (worthless copies of the Western hardware) hence they are ahead on this newest warfare technology. Bayarktar have been proven in Armenia-Azerbaijan and in the Syrian war. Initially, Ukraine used the Bayarktar but either the Russians managed to shoot all of these down or these were withdrawn in favor of free hardware from US/NATO.

India woke up late to the new war technology. Indian Marshals and generals are trained in the conventional warfare technology of Tanks, fighter jets, artillery and frontal attacks. They woke up late to the low cost drone danger from high above. The Indian drone Rustom (under development for 10 years) was not very successful. As this remains a prototype, the private sector must contribute to the effort.

US and Israel had built high powered hunter killer drones with long range, higher ceiling and bigger payload capacity. India has leased two United States MQ-9 drones for naval surveillance. Other drones of Israeli descent (Heron) were acquired, but in insufficient quantity. The Indian Army are just about now writing out RFI and acquisition specifications for drones from Indian sources. They need 2200 drones, including low cost UAVs, UCAVs, attack loitering ammunition, swarm drones and others. The most urgent need is high flying surveillance drones for the northern border.

The lowest of the low cost Iranian drones/flying bombs acquired by Russia from Iran were used in Ukraine. The western sources claim that most of these were shot down. Whatever reached their target, have created a havoc by shutting down 40% of power distribution system there.

Negotiations are underway to acquire 30 of the major MQ9 drones from the United States. Once acquired, these high flying drones will change the balance of drone power in the neighborhood. But this is a high-tech export from the U.S. It is subject to numerous restrictions and approvals, hence a long process.

The low cost drones are to be built in India and negotiations with Indian vendors with outside collaboration are in progress. The whole process is three to four years late.

The Army needs urgently surveillance drones from Indian sources. These can be built in two to three years, also needed is a drone killer system, but none exists other than missile shoot down. The Ukrainian war could lead to that technology development. Missiles are expensive to build and use. Iranian type drones are cheaper than buying a car.

US drones are 1 gen ahead of Israel ones, and equipped with best comms, sensors etc plus training & support.
All nato & israel drones depends on usa global comms, and buying drones from usa helps to improve relations, & real time info/data from usa during war like situations etc.

The warfare in coming decades is undergoing a dramatic change. The manned fighters and bombers are to be used less and less and the task of destroying the enemy from the air will be assigned to drones of multiple categories.

The current war in progress in Ukraine is amply proving the point. There are more drones flying all over Ukraine any day than fighter pilots. Some advanced drones with surveillance and attack capabilities are doing the job which an expensive planes and pilots in them did before. Advancement in drone technology has taken the world by a storm. The American built MQ-9 drone with highly accurate missiles is an equivalent to any advanced fighter. Very soon technology will advance to drones launching air to air missiles, shooting down other drones or fighter aircraft.

Suddenly in the middle of the Ukrainian war a so called very unsophisticated drone built by Iran made its appearance. The American built missiles were shooting it down in large number but at a huge cost of $200,000 a missile where as the drone only cost $20,000. Finally the American aided Ukrainians realized that there is no point shooting it down. In fact the Iranian built drones did a huge damage to the Ukrainian urban and rural infrastructure.

Hence in next 10 years, drones will become the accepted tool of war downgrading a fighter or a bomber. Is India learning lessons from it?

We do not have full understanding of drones requirement of the Indian Armed forces, although sketchy details have been published now and then.

How much effort in the manufacture of military drones is being put by the HAL/DRDO combine and how much effort is being supplemented by highly efficient private sector And IITs. Some very capable drones like MQ9 are on import cum lease list. Hence we do not know where we stand.

We outside the armed forces need a full debate on these.

6th gen jets, H20, B21, Pak da list go on and drones can't match manned planes. The major advantage of drones were small size, no human loss, less cost compared to manned jets, but manned are more accurate & deadly plus adapt according to challenges of battle field. The major area were drones were used is in CAS & low strike missions, means drones not replacing manned jets or anything & not replacing cas aircraft but a supplement to existing weapons. For ex. consider submarines & submarine don't replace surface ships like wise drones is not replacing other weapons, many be in future future when human population not enough to fill the job vacancies.
Indian armed forces not considering spending huge money on drones which is very less effective compared to manned jets, but considering less costly drones with high effectiveness[like iran drones], & indian private sector can develop cheap drones.

No they are bought to be used against indian centric warfare
And how and where you are going to use them against India LOL? There is barely Pakistani missile/aircraft which can cross Indian aerospace and come deep during a war given India's air defence capabilities.

Only way you can use it when India invades and violates Pakistani territory like Russia did to Ukraine (it won't win your war though).
