Indians bought 17 lakh more Chinese phones this October than October 2019 despite Galwan

New Delhi: Data on online smartphone shopping has shown that Indians bought 17 lakh more Chinese devices this October than they did last year. This despite calls to boycott Chinese products and support ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ amid the ongoing tensions between India and China at the Line of Actual Control and the Indian government banning over 200 Chinese apps.

Tech market analyst firm IDC, that looked at both the online and offline sales figures, said: “… India’s smartphone market registered a massive year-over-year (YoY) growth of 42% in October, shipping 21 million units. The growth was driven by multiple online sale festivals and continuing pent up demand from 3Q20.”

An executive at a leading smartphone market analyst firm, who requested anonymity, shared estimates for how many phones the top fives mobile brands in India sold online during October 2019 and October 2020.

Of these, four are Chinese — Xiaomi, Vivo, realme and Oppo.

In October 2019, these Chinese brands sold an estimated 46.07 lakh smartphones. Fast forward a year, and the sales jumped by nearly 17 lakh to 63.01 lakh smartphones.

These numbers were calculated based on the figures shared by the smartphone market analyst.

The estimates show that consumer trends didn’t take a hit from the boycott calls that emerged in June after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in a violent clash with Chinese soldiers. Among those supporting the boycott was Union Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan. In June, the government banned the first tranche of Chinese apps, adding to the list over the months.

As it stands, October saw two prominent and heavily promoted online sales from Amazon and Flipkart to coincide with the festive shopping season.

While Amazon held its ‘Great Indian Festival sale’ from 16 October to 13 November, offering discounts up to 70 per cent, Flipkart held its flagship ‘Big Billion Days sale’ from 16 to 21 October.

This year’s ‘Great Indian Festival’ was one of the longest Amazon has held, according to a Times of India report. Flipkart said it saw double the number of customers visiting its mobile category during the sale.

China buys Indian rice for 1st time in decades as supplies tighten.

China has started importing Indian rice for the first time in at least three decades due to tightening supplies and an offer from India of sharply discounted prices, Indian industry officials told Reuters.

India is the world's biggest exporter of rice and China is the biggest importer. Beijing imports around 4 million tonnes of rice annually but has avoided purchases from India, citing quality issues.

The breakthrough comes at a time when political tensions between the two countries are high because of a border dispute in the Himalayas.

"For the first time China has made rice purchases. They may increase buying next year after seeing the quality of Indian crop," said B.V. Krishna Rao, president of the Rice Exporters Association.

Indian traders have contracted to export 100,000 tonnes of broken rice for Dec-February shipments at around $300 per tonne, industry officials said.

China's traditional suppliers, such as Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and Pakistan, have limited surplus supplies for export and were quoting at least $30 per tonne more compared with Indian prices, according to Indian rice trade officials.

Unfortunately Chinese phones are cheaper and after-sales service is good for the established brands.

Chinese phone is a dangerous thing as it can transmit a lot of data about the user to our unfriendly neighbor. This data can be used for analysis and then targeting vulnerable individuals.

Curbing the dragon is difficult in the short term. Biggest problem is EU and Canada which love Chinese money.

Data speaks:

Despite resistance, China increases share in Indian import basket

Despite the drop in demand post lockdown and the general resentment towards Chinese products after Ladakh incursion, China increased its share in imports into India. Imports from the dragon country came down only by 29 per cent between April and August this year compared to 48 per cent decline in overall imports.

Also article:
Imports came down by 29% between april and august, bc kehna kya chahte ho, volume(in terms of money) will obviously increase because prices don't remain static year on year, inflation happens and cost increases so even with the same percentage of imports the "amount(in terms of costs)" is obviously going to increase, correct me if I am wrong, sad to see propaganda being allowed in the forums

Did you read the article?

"Imports from the dragon country came down only by 29 per cent between April and August this year compared to 48 per cent decline in overall imports."

It's an absolute decrease but a relative increase.

To bring a considerable decrease in import of electronics on a permanent basis It is Indian Government which needs to take action and bring manufacturing here in India.

Unfortunately not much has been done.. not just that after the apps ban Chinese companies like Mi VIVO One plus Oppo et have actually taken more control over the phone data.

Ideally if Info Minister were serious they would have forced these companies to provide Stock Android .

I don't have much hope from the current leadership as far as China is concerned it seems they are letting them take control.
