Looks like most, if not all, have ACH with integrated comns

Identical equipment what the conventional units are getting now…..*

* except paras get cool guy sunglasses and desert boots to show how ‘special’ they are

Throw in some MACS or MiliTech Tactical Clamp for NVG/TI, and you've an acceptable system (?)

Photos might not come out, they are being very hush hush. Photographs of Marcos were very limited during their recent exercise.
Well , they did provide us with weeks load of satisfaction, didn't they , now standardizing the show is what is left . Ok , BTW any news on Northern Command's PNVD RFI ?

I've mentioned about the unknown camo in Camouflage Thread . Its a unique pattern available only to Para Rgt ( more common in airborne , rare but available to sf)
It's made by a small shop setup in Belgaum who get these made from Karnal. Almost all para units and entire Commando wing buys from him. It's a copied pattern but nobody knows from where

basically ^

AFSOD is not worth being excited over, it’s an experiment- that’s about it. No new equipment will be procured by them. IF the experiment works in 3-4 years they might think about expanding it to a full fledged command (maybe around the time theatre commands become a reality). In that case a full decade from now before we can expect Indian SFs to have their own independence from conventional baggage- best case scenario

The only thing assuring in this programme , is its name and probable possibility. And we should've started out with weapons selection , or atleast equipment drills , one of the most important steps being transition to ar-15 or SBRs , as shooting drills and techniques , would be designated accordingly to situations and locations . Then organisational joint operability .

Joint training and Standard op procedures between forces would help in recognising what weapons suit the Afsod. Or would you rather buy the weapons first and then afterwards have the three forces complaining that these weapons do not suit their needs?

Buying small sets of weapons for conducting tests , wouldn't hurt much I hope and this is a personal opinion 😅😅

Like @abingdonboy said, AFSOD is unlikely to be anything but a 'Development group' in the true sense.

As per the article they are working on developing common SOPs, seeing what works & what doesn't, which is an EXTREMELY important thing and I'm GLAD is being done. Hopefully, these SOPs go on to become standard across all services' SFs going forward.

And hopefully, this will progress into developing & testing procedures with new equipment as well. The kind of high-speed room clearing that can be enabled with proper binocular nightvision (let alone PANODs), the effective use of IR lasers & illuminators, etc etc requires a dedicated team comprising field operators, back-end staff (and personnel from corresponding companies) to work around the clock to develop procedures & test equipment.

Even after a SOCOM-esque overarching command structure may emerge to encompass all Indian SOF units, the AFSOD may forever remain as a 'Dev group' unit that looks after these requirements.

Interesting the size of AFSOD is pretty similar to JSOC. I think their functionality will be also same a strike team and a support team for developing tactics.
