That does not fly in this day and age, especially for SF. Modern warfare demands that the special operator be up to date with the latest equipment being used by other forces, esp. if such equipment is also being used by the enemy ! This knowledge and the willingness to adapt to newer better tactics and equipment is also part of being 'special' is it not ?
Absolutely. Para SF personnel may be fucking Rambos, but for all I know and care, they are just infantry with more muscles if they cannot perform unconventional warfare or true 'special' operations. Both of which require knowledge, not only of tactical equipment and tactics associated with them, but also of culture, language, economics, technology, etc.
The 'average Jawan' in a SOF should have at least entry knowledge in all the abovementioned fields. Fanboys claim that Para SF trains soldiers for more than 3 years. What is the use if the above skills are not taught?
Look at the US Army Special Forces for example. What do you think sets them apart from the rest of the US Army? The fact that they can hold a gun in a more tacticool fashion? Or that they can shoot it a few hundredths of a second faster? The answer is neither, but the kind of knowledge they have wrt the theater they operate in, the terrain, the culture, language, etc. And of course, tech.
