"Sir, I swear I saw a giant squid, it was this big!"
I know its in sheer jest you quipped this, but for someone who has seen this army general from so close as a dynamic young and handsome commando wing instructor.I couldn't help writing this.
Of course,I was a small young school boy then, watching in awe this young officer's daring feats.
He started with demo on snake catching and caught more than a dozen snakes (of diff shapes and sizes) using different techniques.Catching with bare hands was also one of them.

He also performed the below exercise. but using only one hand to hold that pulley handle(and still maintaining the proper shape) !!

I still remember boys back in school imitating him by trying to hold horizontal bar with one hand (with feet up) and shouting,"Captain Dua Tayyar!!". Lol

So guys,we absolutely have no idea as to where they come from and therefore I think we should refrain from making such out of turn comments on these guys who are epitome of supreme fitness, professionalism and nerves of steel.
We can't even imagine what they have done/doing for us in the conditions we are totally oblivious of.
Good to see him General today. At least the army gave him his dues(actually he earned it) if not us!!

Have a sense of humor, man. Don't fight against semantics, if you want to fight, then fight against the narrative.

On the specific topic of Counter-Balance:

I do not know if current counter-balanced mechanisms (AK 107s, AEKs) are as reliable.
The Russian military is opting for AK 12 against the A 545(counter-balanced). The mechanism was there since the 70s but no military has favored it much. So might be that something is being compromised for the lesser recoil (that we do not know of / we are not being told).

But that is not to say that we cannot develop & test better recoil-less weapons of our own.

As for caliber/rifle or smg debate, I trust our soldiers to choose wisely as the situation demands. The nation (DRDO, ARDE, the people) can help them by giving them good weapons to choose from.
I was just reading this and rememebered I saw an Ak-107 video recently. It might interest you.

The counter balance thingy seems good.

The fat guy talking is, if I remember right, an ex-Delta force operative and andrei (the non-talking russian) is, if i remember right, the main weapons tester guy for the Kalashnikov koncern.

Watch in HD :)

This must be from a Ghatak unit
I've heard they call Ghatak whenever raiding a paki LOC post,a few year back Paki ISPR accused India of cross border raid killing one and seriously wounded another, also Indian forces left a dagger and a live bullet to mark their presence.

I think it was a post in Krishna ghati sector where we have an advantage of height :)

Maybe silenced Sterling's are being completely replaced with MP 9 and UZI.

Why would Ghatak units carry small caliber, room-intervention weapons?
Being bought to replace the Stens/Sterlings.

The main purpose of these weapons is quite well demonstrated in the above pic- stealth. Low calibre silenced weapons are sinisterly quiet and thus can be used for sentry neutralization and such. If you are intending to fight at close range this is the way to go.

I guess the Ghataks have got this from the PARA (SF) who use silenced Micro Uzis for this role.

Ghataks come under the command of the Btn commander and along the LoC these local commanders have huge scope for selecting tactics. Calling in a "true" SF team would require "going up the chain" so sending in the Ghataks may be prefered by local commanders for all kinds of missions. I've heard quite a few (admitedly anecdotal) accounts of Ghatak teams doing some pretty interesting stuff along the LoC.

Like I said, the Ghataks, present local/btn commanders with a much wider set of options than would normally be available in other militaries.

Just some questions I've wanted to ask for a long time..
1- The Commando Course at Belgaum, is that the one who's graduates become Ghataks?
2- Are all Infantry Officers passing out of IMA required to complete the Commando Course?
3- How capable are Ghataks vis-a-vis a true blue SF unit like the PARA SF?

Nope. The "commando" course at Belguam is a mandatory course for all officers who want to join Infantry btns. This course is like the Ranger leadership course.

Ghataks have a different training course entirely focused on specialised small team operations.

Yes, see above.

They will not have the same "all round" capability as the "true blue SFs" (MARCOs,Garuds, PARA (SF) )- few will be airborne qualified, few will be lingustics experts, few will have FAC training etc etc. They will be damn good "shock troops" and will perform well in their limited remit, they aren't strategic assets like SFs are meant to be but are good at what they do.

Any idea about SPG's Special Intervention Unit?

From MMS's bhashan in 2011:

I am happy to know that the SPG is one organisation that has been thinking ahead and making constant efforts to improve its tactical response to meet the ever changing threats. Following the sanction of the Special Intervention Unit, I am sure the SPG will go all out in its efforts to operationalise and put in place its new counter -terrorist arm at the very earliest.

Ranked as the 7th largest country in the world and flanked by a few difficult neighbours, it is definitely a Herculean task to safeguard a country like India. But nothing can be too big a task for us Indians. We know very well how to protect ourselves from terrorists and insurgent attacks

Capt Pawan Kumar, 10 Para (SF)

KIA in J&K at Pampore battle with terrorists - Feb 2016.

This could have been avoided. Para commandos should not be sent to tackle insurgency issues, they are meant for special operations and it is a very specific skillset that they carry. On top of that, despite his extraordinary courage, the government has still not been able to bring the situation under control. The government must rethink its policy of using minimal force. They could have used heavy guns and subdued the situation. Victory over terrorism is not just about winning a gun battle, we also need to win the narrative war. In jihadi parlance, every attack on India is seen as a David vs Goliath battle so the very fact that the terrorists were able to sneak in is seen by them as a victory. Whatever happens next is simply a bonus for them. This perception of victory will be used to raise the moral of local jihadis and their recruitment will only go up.

The government isn't considering the narrative war at all. The fact that a group of 3 terrorists can hold the imagination of a nation of 1.3 billion people hostage itself is a loss of initiative as far as the narrative war is concerned. We must have rules which mandate the conclusion of any counter-terror operation within a day even through the use of disproportionate firepower if necessary. Instead, we keep sacrificing our officers in a deluded bid to save collateral damage while those ungrateful 'collaterals' don't see us anything more than kaffirs.

Letting a siege go on for multiple days erodes the morale of the entire nation, it's like allowing your tormentor to sit on your head and yap in your ear for days. The government must realize that this is not a test cricket match to allow it to go on for days. They must also think about the effect this has on the psyche of the nation and that of the enemy. It demoralizes our nation and raises the morale of the enemy, thereby justifying the cost-benefit analysis of Pakistani establishment. As long as their terror attacks bear such handsome dividends (week long coverage and internationalization of Kashmir issue), they are never going to stop doing it. We must deny them the propaganda advantage, bring an artillery strike on the building and conclude CT ops in a few hours at the most. It's not worth sacrificing our soldier's lives for. 7 of our people have been martyred, 13 injured. This is not justified.

That building is already fucked, there are no civilians inside, it's prudent to bring in the heavy guns and end this immediately. Otherwise, let the QRT of local secular members of J&K police handle it. We should not sacrifice our mainland boys to save those ungrateful valley rats.
