New Delhi: There was high drama during Home Minister P Chidambaram’s press conference in New Delhi when a journalist threw a shoe at the minister.

Chidambaram was speaking with journalists on terror and Congress' policies, when the incident occurred.

The Home Minister was referring to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots when the journalist, Jarnail Singh, asked him a question regarding the CBI clean-chit to Congress leader Jagdish Tytler.

When Chidambaram averted the question, Jarnail Singh - who works with Hindi daily Dainik Jagaran - threw a shoe at him.

The minister dodged and the shoe narrowly missed him.

Though he looked momentarily stunned, Chidambaram regained his composure almost immediately, asking the reporters to not get distracted. He also said he had forgiven Jarnail Singh.

"Please take him away," the minister said. Congress party workers immediately took the white turbaned journalist away.

During the news conference, Chidambaram condemned the Assam bomb blasts and said that India's pluralitistic nature makes it a target.

Chidamabaram promised that if voted to power, the Congress will set up a "war room" headed by Cabinet Secretary to deal with terror.

"Congress is alive to challenges posed by terrorism and can provide a strong leadership to fight it," he added.

I don't think Chidambaram deserves it. He's a good man. Though I guess the responsibility comes with the portfolio.

chidambaram is extemely arrogant and takes on a patronising tone most of the time. he was obfuscating the questions on tytler's case and misuse of CBI. he deserves it and many more politicians. this represents the frustration among the ppl.

its time politicians get their act together.

It was under the NDA government that Nanavati Commision was set up to have a relook at 1984 riots and thats why the cases were reexamined

Whatever your reasons, there is some decorum to be followed. You have to respect the post of the person if not the person. Besides it shows us in bad light in the world as this was done in full media glare.

Right you are....but one has to ask the question...was justice served by rewarding him?

Chidambaram was very calm - and so were the security people.

When the shoe was thrown at George Bush the security guys jumped on him and pinned him to the ground. This guy is simply escorted out, and Chidambaram is smiling. :)

I thought the now removed discussion was going along pretty well....

Yes, to come to think of it compared to other shoe incidents...
Jarnail Singh will most likely keep his job, will get a few lac rupees, go scot free, and most likely succeed in removing Tytler... and he regrets his decision and he has been condemned by almost all ..
Not bad!

which justice ??
Pyro the fact is though the Indian courts are by and large very fair, but when it comes to high profile cases, IMO there is an unwritten rule where by the opposition and govt are in cahoots in subverting justice.

Congress is on verge of scoring a major coup, if it debars Tytler and Sajjan Kumar. This would ensure all minority communities would end of voting enmasse for Congress. To come to think of it imo it this whole charade could be a Congress ploy ??

They are fair? Yes, they might be only when they finish the judging a case. I had the impression that our judicial system is inept and the legal procedure is so time and money consuming that common people are weary of it.

IMHO, on the contrary congress lost face with most. This incident stirred a hornet's nest for congress. It stirred the memory of anti-Sikh riot.

The guy had gonads though. Jarnail Singh. Gotta give him that. It takes guts to throw a shoe at the Home Minister.
