Any plan for mass replacement of passenger coaches for Indian railways?

There are 13000+ passenger trains running. Even if we assume 10 coaches per train on average, that's 1.3 lakh coaches. Big opportunity to boost domestic manufacturing and will impact people's lives as well.

I have seen tender for 200 trains, which is disappointing

As of March 2020, Indian Railways' rolling stock consisted of 2,93,077 freight wagons, 76,608 passenger coaches and 12,729 locomotives.

about 6000 passenger coaches are manufactured per year in India, probably on par with china.

train sets like vande Bharat is a parallel manufacturing exercise.

old rolling stock of passenger coaches continues to be replaced/upgraded on annual basis.

there is also a tender for one lakh freight rakes, last month.

There is on-going project to replace all old ICF coaches with LHB ones. But the LHB itself is old design from 90s.
We need totally new design from current times with lighter material.

Indian Govt as a matter of policy does not take risks, if there is a choice between proven technology and state of art technology, they will choose proven technology.

I had assumed VB was T18 but instead it’s a series like the Shinkansen. They are even using theShinkansen series as a benchmark (first iteration was ~160Kmph like T18). It seems like the goal is in 10-15 years down the line to have an indigenously designed HSR to rival (current day)Shinkansen tech.

Gladly not 'them' themselves but Indian private sector (L&T)


+ the freight EMU is very interesting, it will be enormously beneficial for e-commerce


++ finally a GoI that is taking logistics costs seriously, when did anyone before the Modi govt even mention this subject? For the first time in decades railways actually gained market share in the freight sector, unbelievable that an economy the size of India's is >70% reliant on road for its freight, no wonder manufacturing is non-existent.

Not bad, at 52 seconds, its faster than the 57-58 seconds an E5 Shinkansen would have taken to do that on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad HSR. Acceleration is more important than top speed for current Indian tracks, IMO.

lets hope that they are safer than before and the possibility of derailments are vastly decreased and chances of hitting another train virtually none.
