Railway coaches to be 100% Made in India by 2022 end | India News - Times of India

Sources said in recent years the Indian Railways’ import component of manufacturing parts have reduced steadily and now it’s around 1.6% of total value of items. They said efforts have been undertaken to reduce this share of imports further and some of the last few remaining items like wheels and axles are now going to be fully manufactured in India.
In 2020-21, Indian Railways imported 60,000 LHB wheels, which is a 100% annual requirement of LHB wheels by the railways. About 4,000 axles, which constitute around 18% of Indian Railways annual requirement, were imported.

The LHB coaches use forged wheels. Axles of all the rolling stock are forged and wheels were imported because they were not manufactured here and axles were imported because of capacity constraints.

“Steps have been taken to indigenize forged wheel manufacturing through SAIL, Durgapur and Forged Wheel Plant of RINL being set up at Raebareli. Indian Railways have entered into an assured off-take contract with the Forged Wheel Plant of RINL for 80,000 wheels per annum that encouraged them to set up this plant. It is scheduled for commissioning shortly,” said an official.

How many portions are left to complete the whole east and west corridors.

Isn't this the second portion to be flagged off?

Railways complete challenging tunnel drive of 800m in Kolkata inspite of Covid challenges

Tunneling work gets completed by Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) in East West Metro Corridor with the breakthrough of "Urvi" at Bowbazar, Kolkata yesterday

With this breakthrough, entire TBM tunneling for East West Metro project gets completed

This stretch was very difficult for tunneling work as it had century old buildings

The tunneling work gets completed by Tunnel Boring Machine [TBM ] in East West Metro Corridor with the breakthrough of “Urvi“ at Bowbazar, Kolkata on 15.05.2021. With this breakthrough the entire TBM tunneling for the Kolkata East-West Metro Project is completed. The stretch was difficult for tunneling work as it had century old buildings. This challenging tunnel drive of 800m has been completed successfully amidst this pandemic situation following COVID-19 protocol.

The Tunnel Boring Machine ‘Urvi’ which had earlier completed East Bound tunnel from Esplanade to Sealdah on 09.10.2020 was relaunched from Sealdah after necessary refurbishment and inspection on 09.01.2021 to complete the balance 800 m tunneling work in West Bound tunnel from Sealdah to Bowbazar. This drive of tunneling has been completed and the tunnel boring machine break through at Retrieval Shaft at Bowbazar has been achieved yesterday i.e. 15.05.2021.

This TBM [Urvi] has passed below Sealdah Flyover also for which vehicular movement on the Fly over was closed for 3 days for safety reasons. After completion of this TBM drive, the tunnel boring machine ‘Urvi’ along with the other stalled TBM ‘Chandi’ will be retrieved from this retrieval shaft at Bowbazar.

Excavation of shaft after ensuring the water tightness of the shaft and the affected tunnel and retrieval of the TBMs are intricate activities which have to be done safely and hence will take time.

After completion of entire excavation, both the TBMs will be retrieved in pieces from the shaft. The RCC flooring and roofing for the shaft area will be completed thereafter and the shaft top will be backfilled to prepare the ground for overground construction.

My question remains: Why the heck don't we export railways the way China does to other developing countries of the world?

Being a non-intrusive country, we might have better luck earning foreign exchange from them on international credit terms.
Our railways is just getting better since Vajpayee first mentioned golden quad and developed with more focus under Modiji....I can see only Africa where we could compete but in Africa you need muscle to protect your investments. There is a big power struggle going on there...

Exactly. Chinese don't export just bullet trains. Heck most of their client countries don't even have normal trains. So that is what they build there.

This socialist mentality will only stop when Indian Railways will be corporatized under the government, Similar to ONGC-Videsh.

There is a lots of material in the area of Railway which we can export ranging form puting railway line in some other countrries to export of engines and teainsets. Tejas Express, train 18 are of very good quality of train sets. They have a lots of potential of export. What we need is an aggressive push from power companies and government.

Well, that won't happen until the IR entity functions like a corporation. IR needs to be put on BSE and managed as a corporate entity. Let the Ministry of Railways decide the regulations and monitor the development, but IR especially the manufacturing factories, need to be hived off as separate PSEs.

Without corporatization, the old thoughts will continue.
