Karnataka's Garuda Force Wants Chopper for Quick Response.
BENGALURU: Friday’s swoop on terror suspects has sharpened the focus on strengthening the Garuda force, the anti-terror unit of Karnataka. The force, which needs to give quick and effective response to any terror strike, has asked for a helicopter to enhance its capability.
The strike force, raised in 2010, comes under the Internal Security Division of the state and is equivalent of the National Security Guard (NSG). A senior serving Army officer directly supervises the training.
“A proposal was sent to the Home Ministry sometime ago seeking a chopper for training and operational requirement of the force,” a senior officer in the anti-terror unit told Express.
A senior officer in the state Home Department too said they have written to the Centre. “No decision has been taken yet on buying the helicopter,” the officer said. The Garuda unit was formed after Karnataka failed to get an NSG unit that was sanctioned for other big cities after the 26/11 terror strikes in Mumbai.
“Given the heavy traffic on city roads, it is difficult for the force to reach the spot in a short time. The team is well-trained and equipped with modern weapons required for anti-terror operations. A chopper will help them reach the spot quickly,” the officer said.
Former DG&IGP S T Ramesh concurs. If the proposal gets the Centre’s nod, the strike unit in Karnataka will be the first to have a chopper for training and operations. In fact, the Mumbai police too have asked for a chopper, but are yet to get it. “The proposal for a chopper to ATS was sent to the Home Ministry a few years ago, but we are yet to receive any response,” Ahmed Javed, Mumbai Police Commissioner, told Express.
Currently, the force has to take the help of the Indian Air Force if they need to be airlifted to a location outside the state capital, where they are located now. “That involves some procedures and it also takes time. The government has to consider the request for the chopper on priority,” the official added.
The demand for the chopper, sources said, came up for discussion during a recent meeting of senior police officers chaired by Home Minister G Parameshwara.
On Guard, Always. BENGALURU: For the state’s anti-terror commandos from the Garuda unit, every day is packed with action as they have to be on the guard 365 days of the year, day or night.
Keeping fighting fit comes at a cost for these young commandos chosen from the Karnataka State Police. Each one in the Garuda team undergoes rigorous training under the supervision of a serving army officer deputed to the state police unit by the Army headquarters.
These commandos are also trained with the best of the forces and facilities across the country, including National Security Guard (NSG) facility, army commandos and other special forces. This also helps ensure inter-operability of the forces in anti-terror operations.
At their training camp on the outskirts of the city, the commandos get busy every day with their morning drill.
All commandos report to senior officials on duty and gather at the ground for a physical fitness routine.
As the gentle rays of the morning sun hit the base, they warm up for a long day ahead of them. Bengaluru’s pleasantly nippy weather offers a perfect training ground for these men in their black uniforms with a special insignia.
On a normal day, their routine starts early when they report for the morning drill, followed by firing practice. On many days, it goes on till the middle of the night when they get into action with their night-vision devices.
Since the force is primarily meant for urban anti-terror missions, night-vision and close-range firing practice are an essential part of their training.
The force was raised in 2010 and has police personnel drawn from different units across the state.
