It may happen in the future, but limited to the extent of assisting NIA and CBI in raids or arrests along with local police.
Don't think a large force is required.
Let Govt sort out CBI first, CBI is still created as per Delhi police act .
Not long ago we were discussing that almost all countries like Indonesia, morroco, USA, etc have a dedicated tactical units for their Internal Intelligence Agencies, is it possible in India to to have that for better tactical edge??

In india we don't need tactical units along with I.B, it is being managed quite well given the budget. it is a british legacy well retained. tactical units come into picture when police having to face return fire every other day, In India there were days like that in many parts of the country. police solved those problems without need in gucci tactical units in 70's 80's and 90's itself.

One such example.

We already have CRPF and IRB may as well strengthen them than indulge in any complex process.

BSF, CRPF, ITBP are the size of armed forces of some small nations better put them to good use.
Not just some small nations

BSF with 258k active duty personnel is almost similar in size to the active manpower of British army (79K) +French army (117K) +German army (64K) active. That is top 3 members of NATO (not including USA).

CRPF with about 314K soldiers is even bigger than BSF. Overall the total santioned strength of CAPFs is 939700, out of which there is 11% vacancy or 1.03L.
This is a huge number and exceeds the active duty personnel of PLAGF.

The need of the hour is modernization. This large force, if properly modernized can assist army in case of 2 front war.

@Vishalreddy3 just to add a bit more.

me thinks in medium term the same debate we are having about SF gear will have be done for police as well. After a point, provided the economic growth continues, citizens and investors have be visually assured that their safety is handled by world class policing system.

some time away, but bound to happen.

The CAPF needs structural reforms in addition to its modernization. Our CAPFs comprising ITBP, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Assam Rifles; are always engaged in a quasi war type scenario, be its guarding hostile borders, or internal security challenges like LWE, Terrorism in J&K and NE.
The CAPFs are headed and manned by officers belonging to IPS cadre. CAPFs have their own cadres, but they can rise upto a certain level.
Now this IPS cadre have no knowledge, experience and training regarding how to operate under conflict situations. However, they are given lateral entry into the CAPFs. This is a British era legacy. The sooner this is terminated, the better it is.
IPS cadre can be of use in CBI, NCB, Income Tax, ED etc. That is all they can handle with their current system of recruitment, training.
Also, IPS should be kept out of intelligence agencies like RAW and IB, since they degrade their performance over time.

Criminals in India aren’t that well armed compared to the ones from Surrounding Countries and Around the World. People Rob banks in the US using Modern Semi-Auto and Fully Automatic Weapons back in the 80s and 90s meanwhile the most average criminals in India at that time only had One Shot Indian Kattas, Hunting Rifles or even rarer Lee-Enfield Bolt Action Rifles captured from Police. Most Criminals even now in India aren’t even trained with guns which means an average policemen with average to good training can take them on without much problems during a active shootout even with bolt action rifles.

Sure, but the reason they are not getting those weapons is because of police, isn't it?
where ever automatic weapons are involved, police tactics evolved in those areas like Grey hounds, JKP etc..

USMC is a combined arms force (ground, Naval and air). The number of Infantry men in USMC would be even less!!

If you consider Chinese rag-tag militia as reserves, then please also consider BJP+RSS cadres on our side. They can easily overshadow the Chinese militia numbers.
Yes in our case, these militia is not armed, However, if a need arise, they can be.
After all, they helped IA with many logistical duties during 1962.
