Basically the concept of I.R.B. was first proposed by the Late PM Indira Gandhi ji as a mean to have a trained and uniformed armed police force in every state that would be trained and armed along the lines of the Central police forces and could be deployed anywhere in the country at a short notice. This is how the I.R.B.s came into existence way back in 1971.The Union Govt usually provides 60% of the cost of raising and arming such battalions.Currently,India has around 250 I.R.B.s spread across 28 states and 8 U.T.s
Provided there is a separate ARMED POLICE FORCE in every STATE and UT besides IRBn force??

Basically I.R.B.s are part of the State Armed Polices, the only difference being that the Union provides about 60% of the cost to raise, train and arm them on the lines of our C.A.P.F.s and in turn can deploy them (after seeking necessary permission of the concerned state) in any other state or U.T. if need be.Training wise, the IRBs are somehwhat better trained than the regular State Armed Police battalions. You must have heard of the Naga Battalions that were deployed in Chattisgarh to combats the Naxalites, well those were the I.R.B.s of the Nagaland Armed Police.
