Indian pharma story still underplayed: Dr Reddy's Laboratories chief - The Times of India

HYDERABAD: Despite achieving significant landmarks in the areas of exports and capacity enhancements, the pharma sector story is 'underappreciated' in the country, said Dr Reddy's Laboratories (DRL) chairman and chief executive officer GV Prasad here.

"We (Indian pharma industry) have done a great service by making drugs affordable. The sector is not only a leading exporter of generics but has played a significant role in providing affordable drugs not only to the country but the rest of the world, especially African nations, where the healthcare spends of governments are very less," Prasad said on the sidelines of a curtain raiser on BioAsia 2014, for which DRL is the principal industry host.

Prasad said that the pharma and biotech sectors are the most 'happening' as the intensified R&D thrust is opening up new possibilities in areas such as stem cell research and gene mapping. GVK Bio CEO Manni Kantipudi too pointed out that India provided a very conducive ecosystem for R&D due to the availability of talent.

Meanwhile, speaking about BioAsia 2014 event, its organizing committee chairman and Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA) vice president KV Raghavan said that nearly 1,500 delegates from over a dozen of countries were expected to participate in the event this year, the theme of which is 'Innovate, Evolve'. The principal country partner is United Kingdom, while the international state partners are Santa Fe province of Argentina and Gangwon of South Korea, he said, adding that even the AP government would be unveiling its life sciences policy during the event.
