Back then we were trying to be self sufficient in food .. perspective is important.
Not after 90s. Change of priority is also important

So under project 75 Alpha, India will be designing and building 6 Indigenous SSNs. These nuclear submarines will be designed by Indian Navy's in-house Directorate of Naval Design. All I hope is that the Guys at DND implement Pump jet Propulsion in these subs.

Hope they do something like this:-

Also I am hoping that they will also include X Rudders in these submarines as well.

Is there any reason that we can design and build our own nuclear subs but need foreign partnership for conventional subs?
Because we have never invested in R&D of conventional Submarines as much we did in the case of Nuclear submarines. Mostly we put our Focus on Nuclear submarines.

The only explanation that makes sense is that the nuclear submarines weren't actually our designs.

Cough...RUBIN...cough

Diesel & nuclear submarines aren't two entirely unrelated streams of technology. The only major difference is the propulsion setup. And we've had considerable experience with diesel-electric setups in building warships. There's no logical explanation as to why we would think it okay to spend billions on a foreign design if at all local competence existed to the desired level.

The only thing russians helped us in was the PWR reactor design for the submarine. Even you chinese had stolen and copied their designs to build your own subs.
We built the reactor Completely on our own, the only problem was that the reactor was too large to fit into Arihant's Hull, therefore the Russians helped us in miniaturising/scaling down the hull do that it could fit comfortably into Arihant's Hull.

Russia was the only one at the time who was ready to help us in this project. Also during the time of Arihant's launch, 143 Russian engineers, designers and consultants – all participants in the project – attended the submarine's launch ceremony at Visakhapatnam on the east coast.

Yes, there was considerable Russian assistance in the design and validation of the various systems of the first SSBN. What is there to feel ashamed about.

China owes the origin of its nuclear weapons programme to Soviet help. There was enormous technical assistance to Beijing from the Soviets. The list of weapon categories where Soviet technical assistance helped establish the base is large
Just a few examples.
- fighter aircraft, mainly the Migs
- submarines
- ballistic missile technology
- tanks
- even basic assault rifles. The Ak56 is a rip off of the Ak47.
- early frigates and destroyers designs of the PLAN copied Soviet design
philosophy etc

So who is trying to make India feel guilty. Even the only Super Power now the US
copied many Nazi Germany weapons designs.Scores of German scientists were airlifted to the US after the end of the Second World War to work on weapons projects in the USA.

Having made the point I wish to assert that the successors to the first Arihant nuclear submarine had increased Indian content and design inputs.
We don't steal technology and put IPR's into the dustbin. We collaborated with the Russian government legally and sought technical support after paying the monetary remuneration.

India is slowly climbing the learning curve as far as submarine technology is concerned. How much time will it take to realise an fully indigenous SSK(conventional submarine) design is not clear but I will not be surprised if we do succeed before this decade is over. I predict an fully indigenously designed conventional submarine design before 2030.Probably some systems/subsystems of the submarine might have to be imported. Just like how the Tejas LCA is an Indian design with some imported systems/subsystems.

China should be the last country to accuse us of illegal copying. Credible reports say that the J20 design is based on technology stolen from the the American F22 programme. Whether directly stolen by Chinese agents or through computer hacking done by PLA professionals.

Obviously, your own government doesn't think so. The help was so great that they need the ambassador to attend the ceremony to express their appreciation.

So? India is doing all this by herself?

That is not a simple scaling down the hull! It is scaling down almost every component, from the reactor core to pipeline, etc. That means new materials, new sensors and new design.

What does our government think then , tell us
They thanked the ambasaador for Russia's help in designing the PWR but not even a single critical compoment was imported

So? India is doing all this by herself?
We took help to design our subs and you stole the tech . That's the difference

Oh sorry, my mistake, I meant to say that the Russians had helped India miniaturise the reactor so that it would comfortably fit into the hull of INS Arihant.

Originally the reactor which India had developed was too large to fit in the hull of INS Arihant but later Russia helped in scaling down of the reactor like I said. With this and a few design aspects, the rest of the submarine is Fully Indigenous.

When you got Russian naval design team and their then ambassador attending the launch ceremony of Arihant in Jul 2009, you know how the answer.
(Lol) Do you atleast know why Russian Designers/Engineers who were actively involved in INS Arihant's Development had attended the launch ceremony?

1. It was because that Incase there was any doubt about the extent of Russian involvement in the project than there won't be anymore doubts after seeing all Russian officials who actively participated in the project at the ceremony.

2. And lastly, these Russian officials (consultants/Engineers) had given lot of help in the development of INS Arihant, if it were not for Russia's assistance than today we would not be having INS Arihant, so hence these people have the right to witness the launch ceremony of INS Arihant.

Does anyone have any idea about what the design for Project 75 Alpha SSNs will be like?
