So, S5 class ssbn gets its first international coverage by Forbes.

Good stuff. Even the eminent Mr Sutton is convinced that is a real representation of the S-5

I must commend the L&T SBC team for their exemplary control of information on this project. They've even convinced everyone in India that the ridiculously convoluted "refit" of INS Sindhukirti at HSL was simple incompetence.

This is not the real representation of the S5 . Rather an old test model.

Do you or anybody for the matter really think that the latest model of S5 SSBN will be put on for display ? No good picture of Arihant is available till date even after 15 years and yet we are expecting the latest S5 design to be on display ?

The model which was displayed is an old SSBN model for evaluation and generation of hydrodynamic test points , CGI pic of which was available even in IFR 2016 exhibition .
You have seriously misread the sarcastic intent of the first sentence of my post.

INS Arihant completed its maiden deterrence patrol, meaning that the submarine is fully ready for its role as a strategic deterrent. The Arihant's month-long deployment compares favourably with submarines of the US Navy which go on patrols from 30-70 days. A second SSBN has reportedly completed sea trials. Named INS Arighat, the vessel is due to be delivered next year and is expected to be double the Arihant's displacement at 12,000-13,000 tonnes, with a complement of eight K-4 missiles. Another two vessels after Arighat are planned to be commissioned by 2023. At the same time, India will require a complementary fleet of ship submersible nuclear (SSN) submarines - these are fast, hunter killer subs that will be required to detect and track undersea activity and warships.

The goal was to make INS Arighat queiter than the Project 971 Akula class submarines. INS Arihant is as quiet as the INS Chakra. This makes our subs much more queiter than the Chinese SSBN which are said to be more noisier than Delta class subs of the Russian Navy.

I think INS Arighat has a displacement of 12000 tonnes, most probably the journalist might have gotten inaccurate information from somewhere on the web.

Source please ji. This is big point you are making about silence in our submarines.

The allowances made to SSBN and SSN are very different..
SSN are required to hunt other submarines and required higher speed, power generation and manueverability( cross fins and faster depth control) while
SSBN sole purpose is to stay quiet and stealthy as long as possible. These are just Transporter Erector Launchers made to survive underwater for long durations.
INS Arihant is a SSBN while Akula is SSN so its quite obvious an SSBN will be quieter compared to an SSN while also being a lot slower.

Why the hell would you think it weighs 12k tons? Thats almost the size of vanguard and it carries 16 D-5 each almost 3 times the size of K4

Really? Some of US navy experts didn't agree with you 10 years ago.

Quote:"Ten years ago the latest Chinese attack submarines were considered to be as quiet as the latest Russian Akula Class submarines. Since these estimates were published in 2007, China has launched two improved variants of the Type-093 submarine. So it is a reasonable assumption that the latest Chinese boats will already be quieter."

Not necessarily right.
1. SSN is generally required to hunt the enemy's SSBN within the area well protected by enemy's anti-submarine force.
2. SSBN can sail with very low cruising speed, SSN however has to run at relatively higher speed for hunting.
3. SSBN is generally larger than SSN, which means the engines on SSBN has to produce bigger power than those on SSN. From mechanical point of view, higher power, higher noise.
So, with the same conditions, SSN should be quieter than SSBN.

10 years ago this is what the Office of Naval Intelligence published...

So it is reasonable to assume that Chinese nukes are loud enough to alter the migration patterns of dolphins.

Clearly Japan had no problem detecting them...

Even Vietnamese fishing boats can catch them.

Well I think that both ssbn and SSN are not quite at all. Diesel class submarines are far far more quieter. SSN and SSBN have nuclear reactor which means you need a cooling mechanism , those pipe creates the most noise in nuclear submarine. I would say we should create diesel submarines for local area and for long patrols SSN is required...

This point came up during discussion on another defence forum(i.e. Strategic Front).
And INS Arihant's design was inspired by Akula class subs, so definitely it will be as quiet as the Akula class subs.

The Arihant class is an SSBN. I am comparing it's noise level with the Chinese SSBN and not SSN.
