India becomes 5th country in world to have fully operational submarine-launched nuclear missile

India has a fully operational submarine-launched missile that is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. As and is the process of developing a similar missile that can be launched from land with a range of about 600 km. The land version will complete the Agni and Prithvi series of indigenously developed nuclear missiles.

The scientists who developed this series of missiles, named BO5, were felicitated at the annual award ceremony of the Defence Research Development Organisation in New Delhi today by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

A Joseph and M Ugender Redddy, who developed the BO5 and land version of that missile were today given the "DRDO award for performance excellence" by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharamam.

The citation of the award said "It is an indigenous missile with several innovative designs and unique mechanism. Numerous critical technology were proved in the successful trials which paved the way for developing other long-range submarine-launched Strategic Missiles and has the potential to launched from Submarine, Ship and Land."

The successful induction of the submarine-launched nuclear missile completes India Nuclear Triad, or the ability to launch nuclear missiles from land, air and from underwater should the need arise.

Ability to fire nuclear missiles from submarines is a critical component in executing India's stated nuclear policy of "No First Use" of nuclear weapons. It effectively means that India can launch a nuclear counter-attack from assets positioned deep underwater after a nuclear attack has destroyed much of its capability on land and air.

The launch of the B05 missile from an underwater pontoon, an underwater submersible vehicle that recreates conditions of launching the missile from a submarine, had been made public. The BO5 missiles were launched from a pontoon off the Visakhapatnan in January 2013. The fact that they had been successfully tested from a submarine had, however, had not been publicised.

Top sources also confirmed to India Today that the BO5, the submarine version of the missile, has been successfully tested from a submarine. India has at least one operational nuclear-powered submarine that is capable of launching nuclear weapons. The submarine-launched version of BO5 is now believed to have been deployed as well.

India is the fifth country to have the capability to launch a nuclear missile from a submarine. It joins a small club of nations that include USA, Russia, China and France. The land version of the BO5 hasn't, however, been named. "It is a spin-off from the submarine-launched version," top sources confirmed to Indian Today.

Handing over the prizes to scientist Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharamam said "Prime Minister Modi has stressed on indigenisation. Defence manufacturing cannot be done on borrowed technology."

India already has Agni and Privithi series of nuclear missiles. "The land version of BO5 is cheaper because of advancements made in fuel technology," sources said explaining the significance and need to have another version of land launched nuclear missiles.

Why are they tom toming about some useless 600 km range missile. If K-4 is ready then 3500 km is the range.

must be typo, it should be 6000kms......................................:biggrin2:
As much as the concept sounds cool, but we ain't there yet.
This was 2013 test, first ever submarine based BM test. Hence they are tom tomming it. It is a 5 year old news which these people had hidden from public till now.

This was the first technology demonstrator based on which longer range missiles will be developed. This just goes to show that India is capable of launching from underwater and still guide the missil

Just read the headline and you would know the reason of tom toming. This Tom Tom is not about the missile range, but for the missile test.

What is available in media before is only about testing SLBM from submerged Pontoon, not from a submarine. But this report has shown that we already tested it from Submarine.

Lol everything isn't about range.

B-05 is the best missile for pak not even BrahMos or AGNI.

Prithvi and pralay in future is enough for pakis. I wouldn't waste any other missile on that worthless lot.

The report meant that we have as of now one Nuclear submarine in deployed state with payload to wreak havoc.

So much for open hatch and flooding of propulsion chamber.

It was in dry dock for 10 months and $15 million later it better be repaired.

A submarine safety aspect is in it being an watertight body. And our media comes out with this big bomb that one hatch left open for the propulsion chamber to be flooded.
Propulsion chamber of a Nuke Sub? Are we even serious? It could have been more believable if they would have named any other part of all, but propulsion chamber.

If I am right, it was for confusing enemies that the submarine in the docks was old one and not a newly built one.

True,it might be.Probably an excuse to mislead our adversaries lurking with satellites to have a glance at our big boats. There was no word abt the accident the previous night on MSM or Internet, neither on early hours of the very day.Suddenly,an accident onboard a Strategic asset which is monitered by NSA himself appears on the front page of a newspaper.I'm quite sure nobody in the Navy would like 2 see Dovalji's wrath except if it's on Pakistan.

So how many nuke subs are operational 2 or 3? IN seems to have decided not to say anything about the nuke subs. Hopefully the K-4 testing has gone smoothly and in a few years we will see some old videos.

IN knows how to maintained secrecy, eversince aridhaman/arighat saga no one knows how many nuke subs India is operating. Some says that it's 3, sometimes it's 4 and even no one also knows how many boomers and nuke attack subs IN is operating except INS chakra. How many times k4 is tested from the boomer is also a secret.
