India to buy 26 fighters for INS Vikrant on G-2-G basis
The carrier-based fighter acquisition by the Indian Navy will be part of a larger arrangement with the country selected as India is looking to manufacture fighter aircraft engines under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” plan.

With the indigenous twin-engine deck-based fighter a decade away, the Narendra Modi government will be buying 26 carrier-based fighters for soon to be commissioned INS Vikrant on a government-to-government basis on the recommendation of the Indian Navy.

While the flight test trials of options French Rafale-Marine have already been conducted at the Indian Navy’s shore-based test facility in Goa this January, the trials of US F-18 super hornet are expected to be completed by June 15. Out of the 26 aircraft, the Indian Navy wants 8 twin seater trainers, which can also be used in combat conditions. Both the fighters are virtually of same vintage and both the manufacturers have maintenance, repairs, and overhaul facilities in India.

Both the aircraft have undergone intensive trials at the test facility in Goa but have not landed on India’s sole aircraft carrier, INS Vikramaditya, as it is under major maintenance in Karwar and expected to start sailing later in June. India’s indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant is undergoing sea trials and is expected to be commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2022.

According to South Block officials, India is not looking to lease fighters for INS Vikrant but will go for outright G-to-G purchase of the deck-based fighters from either French Dassault or US Boeing, based on the evaluation of Indian Navy’s aviation wing. Both the companies have dealt with the Indian Air Force with Dassault selling Rafale fighters and Boeing selling P8I anti-submarine warfare platform, Chinook helicopters and C-17 heavy lift aircraft. The two aircraft have proven track records with F-18 being tested in Afghan and Iraq wars by the US Navy.

The carrier-based fighter deal is expected to be linked with a larger strategic arrangement with the country involved as New Delhi is looking for aircraft engine manufacturing under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative with the participation of Indian private sector companies. While French Safran is keen to manufacture 100 kilo newton engines with Indian entities without any pre-conditions, Defence Ministry is also exploring the same with the US as the GE-404 engine is used in the indigenous Tejas fighter and GE-414 being considered for the twin engine advanced multi-role combat aircraft (AMCA) project of the DRDO.
If requirement is down to 26 it only means higher chances of Rafale.

Is it so?
Would not be Rafale cost much more as it has much lower production no.
US has much bigger ecosystem and higher production rate.
Boeing is desperate so get order so can provide much better prices.

Why just 5-6 Growlers only? We could buy a whole squadron of these for the Indian Airforce. Such EW assets would be very useful against PAF and PLAAF.
Overpriced assets. Malaysia considered its F 18 as relics just stands on tarmac.

I am convinced it will be useful. More so since Rafale lacks any anti-radiation missile. Fear of supersonic ARM keeps enemy radars switched off. Growlers can attack radars with both GPS guided and radiation guided weapons.

As far as Malaysian F 18 hornets are concerned they were bought for airforce and these hornets are never designed or meant for airforce and here the requirements for indian navy they suit naval warfare operation

Recently Germany has also ordered F 18 over F 35

There is considerable difference between standard F-18 for Airforce and F/A-18 SH of USN.

There is a chance that navy will take a different route than F 18 because they can easily fit in vikrabt rather than rafale which will take time to remove it's parts to acomedate them in hanger

F 18 has better naval war proven record carry variety of western weapons and comes with best naval EW jamming suit and with lesser price tag

Recently CEO Boeing meet with modi too and USA already pushing India to buy hornets recently USA issued India 40 million defence aid too so things are going in right direction for F 18
No.

Rafale or nothing (for both IAF and IN, mark it

ok. Aap bhi analysis dete ho?
He is a American chap , probably dosent understand hindi .
As far buying jets is concerned, buy f 18 for God's sake .
Tell me , any us weapons we have bought till now aren't thye superior of russian weaponry?
In future, indian navy will operate with us navy more and more.
We can't handle chinks alone , buying f 18 will be better.
Infact, navy shouod give its mig 29 k to airforce and buy more f 18 to replace the shortfall .
Total around 50 jets, for both carriers its then.

But IAF has other thoughts they are going to order 114 Rafales definitely

We no longer care, our foreign policy now is all about confronting those who interfere in our affairs. F18s, though look like good choice but have political restrictions on them, so the navy team will think more than just the technical aspects.
Boeing's PR agency as usual is doing good job.
