Idiotic musing :hmm:

How feasible would it be to get 54 FA-18 for our Naval fleet, but to get FA-18 C/D instead of E/F? They are mostly retired, so airframe stress will be an issue, but I suppose they could be refurbished and upgraded at a minimal cost compared to the other two options.

And capability wise, the change is noticeable, but not dramatic. They also utilise a variant of the F-404 engine, so logistics shouldnt be that hard.

:notsure:

Not enough thrust I would think - and avionics are older. Not obsolete, but not modern either. If we are going that route, buy 2 squadrons of ex USMC Harrier IIs.

It's so weird that P-15 didn't get VL-Shtil during their MLU. I can understand that IN doesn't want to introduce a new SAM into the fleet but then upcoming Tushil class is supposed to have it. Also, the model of Triput class from GSL shows the arm launched Shtil instead of VL Shtil.

CSL is soon going to start the manufacturing of NGMV. Also, we are supposed to get the RFP for NGC very soon. NGMV are around 2000-2500 ton vessels but on the other hand NGC are to have ~3500 ton as their displacement.

Both of this projects paint some similarities along with some difference:

1. According the old RFI, NGMV are supposed to have STAR radar as their primary sensor whereas NGC are supposed to have MFSTAR.

2. NGC are required to have a proper ASW suits coupled with VDS which is lacking in NGMV.

3. Both are to have proper short range SAM system along with Point Defence systems.

4. Both are going to carry 8 Brahmos missiles in VLS as their primary armament.

For me NGMV are like a replacement for Khukri class and Veer class but NGC is looking more like a proper replacement for Talwar and Brahmputra class frigates instead of the Kora class.
