India's Romeo begins flight trials in US, anti-submarine chopper delivery likely in July

New Delhi: The first of the 24 MH-60 ‘Romeo’ anti-submarine helicopters, meant for the Indian Navy, has taken to the sky in New York for flight trials and is likely to arrive in India by the end of July.

The aircraft is part of the 24 ordered by the Narendra Modi government last year from the US under a nearly USD 2.4 crore deal.

These helicopters are meant to meet the immediate requirement of the Navy which is relying on its P-81 aircraft for anti-submarine operations amid China’s increasing forays into the waters around India.

Indian Navy starts process to take 24 naval utility helicopters on lease

New Delhi, Apr 23 (PTI) The Indian Navy on Friday started the process of taking 24 naval utility helicopters on lease by issuing a request for information (RFI) to foreign vendors.

According to the RFI, the Navy plans to keep the helicopters with ground-support equipment for five years.

"This lease will also include all maintenance support ashore, including performance-based logistics (PBL) and training of air crew and maintenance crew during the term of the lease," the Navy said in the RFI.

Guys, what are your thoughts on the recent RFIs being released for procurement of 5MW propulsion motor, AIP, Li-ion batteries?
Does that point to that P75I is pretty much dead and that the IN is moving ahead with an indigenously developed submarine since they think that they have all the necessary kit to make one?
Also, will the option for additional Scorpenes with AIP be exercised to arrest falling submarine nos and to compensate for any delays in the development of indigenous SSK, lets say 3-6 more Scorpene subs?

Nothing is clear mate .

Let's compare the submarine tonnage for 5 mw motor is about 3.2 ton , no active submarine of that class , Kalvari after upgrade too will be much less . Drdo aip is a scalable design as per drdo , li ion battery are being developed by amraon and lnt maybe , so can be sourced from there so , most probably , now you see the competition of project 75i competitors and compare

India recalls second rescue vessel as Indonesia says missing submarine sank

India has recalled the second Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (DSRV) that was airlifted on Saturday morning to Indonesia after the Indonesian Navy declared that it had located debris of the missing submarine, KRI Nanggala, suggesting that it had sunk.

The aim of the intervention system was to locate the submarine and enable timely rescue. With debris now being sighted and the Indonesian Navy saying that the submarine had likely sunk, the intervention system was not required as the nature of search had changed, the official stated.

In addition, KRI Nanggalais believed to be at a depth of over 800 metres which is beyond limit of the DSRV.

However, the first DSRV which was dispatched on Thursday by sea along with its mother ship is still enroute and a call would be taken in the next few days as clarity emerges on the missing submarine, the official said.

INDIAN AND FRENCH NAVIES BEGIN THREE-DAY WARGAME IN ARABIAN SEA
MONDAY, APRIL 26, 2021 BY INDIAN DEFENCE NEWS

French Navy's nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle

The Indian and French navies on Sunday kicked off a three-day mega wargame in the Arabian Sea in the backdrop of rising concern over China's growing maritime presence in the Indian Ocean region.

The French Navy has deployed its nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, and its entire carrier strike group in the exercise, reflecting the seriousness of the drill.

The French Embassy said the 19th edition of the Varuna exercise underscores the shared interests and commitment of both nations in promoting maritime security in the Indo-Pacific and bears testimony to the vitality of the bilateral strategic partnership.

"The joint exercise comprises various drills across the spectrum of maritime operations, with the goal of fostering interoperability and mutual learning between the two navies and reinforcing their capability for joint action in a strategic area," it said in a statement.

The Indian Navy has deployed guided missile stealth destroyer Kolkata, guided missile frigates Tarkash and Talwar, fleet support ship Deepak, a Kalvari class submarine and a sleet of P-8I long range maritime patrol aircraft, officials said.

Besides Charles de Gaulle, the French naval assets at the exercise included multi-mission frigate Provence, air defence destroyer Chevalier Paul, and command and supply ship Var.

The Charles de Gaulle with a displacement of 42,500 tons (four times the weight of the Eiffel tower), carries a crew of 1200, 15.4 per cent of whom are women, and an air wing consisting of 20 Rafale marine jets, two E-2C Hawkeye aircraft and several helicopters.

Its 75-meter deck with catapult launching enables the launch of Rafale marine jets in less than three seconds every 30 seconds.

Indian Navy Spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal said both the navies will endeavour to enhance and hone their war-fighting skills to demonstrate their ability as an integrated force to promote peace, security and stability in the maritime domain.

The embassy said Varuna exercise is part of the French carrier strike group's 'CLEMENCEAU 21' deployment, which the French Navy is conducting from February to June 2021 in the eastern Mediterranean, the Gulf and the Indian Ocean.

"Its goal is to contribute to the stabilisation of these strategic zones and strengthening cooperation with the navies of partner countries, in particular India for the Indian Ocean component," it said.

As part of this deployment, the carrier strike group is also taking part in anti-ISIS operations," the embassy said.

Initiated in 1983, Indo-French naval cooperation plays a key role in the two countries' joint vision for a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific, it said.

"It has intensified in recent years with increasingly ambitious joint exercises that have raised the degree of the two navies' interoperability to a new level," the embassy said.

"In early April, the Indian Navy took part for the first time in the France-led naval exercise 'La Perouse' with the navies of the United States, Australia and Japan," it added.

The Indian side at the exercise is being led by Rear Admiral Ajay Kochhar, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, while the French side is headed by Rear Admiral Marc Aussedat, Commander Task Force 473.

"The three-day exercise will see high tempo-naval operations at sea, including advanced air defence and anti-submarine exercises, intense fixed and rotary wing flying operations, tactical manoeuvres, surface and anti-air weapon firings and other maritime security operations," Commander Madhwal said.

What the everliving fuck. We may not be able to match them, but we should atleast pick up pace against the Chinese.

Another surprising thing I have noticed in the Chinese Navy is their sheer number of destroyers and frigates. They have fewer subs and AC's and more destroyers and frigates. Can anyone explain why?

I don't know they already have like 50+ submarines and that pretty much is enough for them to keep SCS and Indian Ocean under their control!! They use their submarine fleet only for deterrence and not offensive. On the other hand they use their surface fleet for show of power.
Another thing to note that Chinese have pretty much mastered on how to design and manufacture surface fleet, but not their submersible fleet due to lack of technology such as AIP, etc which some of the technology they got/ stole from Sweden SAAB Kockums or even the Japanese soryu class.

Surface fleets are finding it harder and harder to go near opponent shores especially ones that have full spectrum missiles in their arsenal thousands of miles away from their shore. They are almost sitting ducks, decades of navy building may be scuttled in few battles. Submarines are more survivable but limited potential to project power. Chinese do not seem to have applied any new strategies and are just following US whether its economy or defence related so far...
