China on mind, India to get more submarines and drones
Ajay Banerjee

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 3

India will soon move forward for getting six more submarines and has shifted its gaze to have more unmanned systems, all clearly aimed at tackling China at sea.

Chief of Indian Navy Admiral Karambir Singh, addressing a press conference on Thursday, said: “We are going to the Defence Acquisition Council for issuing a request for proposal (RFP), the second stage of the tender is expected.”

"We have focus on unmanned systems," Admiral Karambir Singh said in a reply to a question on the recent lease of two unmanned predator drones from the US company General Atomics.

Predators, he said, were capable platforms with endurance of 33 hours.

“The picture generated by the drones comes only to us,” he said.

Navy would consider deployment of these drones over the Himalayas if the Army and the IAF ask for it.

"We are looking maritime theatre command with positivity," the Admiral said, adding that, the Andaman Nicobar command would be part of it.

On the missing MiG 29K pilot, Lt Cdr Nishant Singh, the Admiral said: "We are still searching”.

On being asked if the pilot locating beacon was functioning, he said it has to be activated by the pilot.

Why Indian Navy now has a camouflage uniform like in Army and Air Force
Navy new Camo uniform.jpeg

Important excerpts from the article:-
Based on a study, which included looking at uniforms worn by navies around the world, the Indian Navy adopted its digital camouflage pattern, the sources said.
The new camouflage uniform will be worn by Navy personnel only on Fridays and ashore as of now, the sources said. For sea, there are existing fire retardant overalls, which would be used by the personnel.
Navy officers added the move also brings in an uniformity with other foreign navies, who have camouflage uniforms.
“For instance, in exercises with other navies, there would not be a mismatch as against earlier,” a senior Navy officer said.
Sorry, but this does not make any sense whatsoever. So the only reason Indian Navy introduced these uniforms was because they felt "out of place" at joint exercises with other Navies? What The Actual Fig? I hope this is not the ONLY reason for introducing this uniform, makes Navy look like a bunch of clueless teenagers with FOMO syndrome. Someone please explain to me the practical utility of these uniforms.

Meanwhile, US Navy is ditching these uniforms (they're calling it their worst uniform ever):

And replacing them with new fire-retardant ones:

The US Navy is doing that because their "camo" uniform is not fire retardant. But this Print article also states that the new uniform will not be worn onboard Indian Naval ships because these new Indian Navy "camo" uniforms are also not fire retardant and that fire retardant uniforms are already in use with Navy onboard ships.
So what in the hell is the bloody point?

To bring commonality in all three services uniforms as Military should be a united branch not divided branches like IA, IAF, IN.

Only the Indian Navy is adopting this Digital Camo Pattern. Army is going for a multicam variant, no DCP. IAF has introduced its own Digital Camo Pattern for the Garuds which is not at all common with this Navy camo.
I don't see any commonality. Moreover, I don't see why Navy crews even need disruptive camouflage? They go to combat in a boat. Said boat does not have this camo pattern. Maybe in littoral environments it makes some sense to have this on a boat, but the Navy isn't using it there either. In a rubber dinghy or RHIB, a VBSS squad might make use of it, but again, it should be fire retardant for that role, which it is not.

Meanwhile, this is how the US Navy thinks of its current camo uniform (its hilarious):

Good riddance, blueberries! Navy bids farewell to its worst uniform ever
After 11 perilous years of parading around looking like victims of an airplane toilet explosion, the Navy finally is saying sayonara to the Type I Navy Working Uniform, a heinous half-nylon boondoggle that not only wasted hundreds of millions of dollars but endangered the lives of everyone who donned the accursed “blueberry."
That’s because until 2012, sailors didn’t realize that a mere spark could turn them into blueberry flambé.
Or — as the Navy Clothing and Textile Research Facility eloquently put it after testing a uniform that doubled as “a thermoplastic fiber” Yankee candle that “melts and drips” when lit — it “will burn robustly until completely consumed.”
Surveys suggest most sailors, if given the opportunity, will robustly choose to avoid welding clothing to their skin.
A pile of blueberries and a lone Zippo might’ve solved the Navy’s NWU I problem in 2013 but, instead, the admirals embarked on a three-year process of swapping it out for what looks suspiciously like Marine Corps digital woodland cammies.
At least sailors falling overboard today will stick out like a deciduous forest inexplicably bobbing from the sea and be saved.

Ya'll Nibbiara All Talwar class frigates are deployed from Mumbai. The ships are deployed in counter-piracy missions in the Arabian Sea & also carry out HDR missions when needed. They frequently visit ports of the neighboring Gulf & African nations. 6 of them are in service, 4 more ordered.
