Indian Navy's 4th LCU Of Mk IV Project Launched

Adding yet another milestone in India's quest for self-reliance in sophisticated shipbuilding, the fourth ship in the series of eight Landing Craft Utility (LCU) Mk IV project - Yard 2095 - for the Indian Navy was launched at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE), Kolkata, here today (23 Mar 2015).

The launching of Yard 2095, designed and built by GRSE was done in the presence of Vice Admiral RK Patnaik, Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff and Smt. Seli Pattanaik.

Invocations from Atharva Veda were recited and Smt. Pattanaik named the ship 'LCU L54' and wished the ship good luck before launch.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice Admiral Pattanaik asserted that Indian Navy has been the torch-bearer in the drive for indigenous construction of warships and acknowledged the role of GRSE as a reliable partner in pursuing the national goal of 'Make in India'.

The DCNS also extended warm felicitations to the entire team of the GRSE for their significant contribution towards meeting the Navy's growing requirements of state-of-art warships.

Two LCUs were earlier launched on March 12 and September 23, last year. The third LCU was launched on January 16, this year.

These ships will play significant role in transportation of main battle tanks, armoured vehicles and troops of the Indian Army during amphibious operations.

The ship can be deployed for maritime roles like maritime security, beaching and un-beaching operations, humanitarian relief operations and evacuation from distant islands, search and rescue operations besides peacekeeping missions.

Russia offers to build Project 11356 frigates in India's shipyards

Russia has made the proposal to India that Project 11356 frigates with improved performance be built in the shipyards of that country. This was reported in an interview by Vladimir Ereshenko, the head of the regional department of Rosoboronexport, with RIA Novosti.
He headed the Rosoboronexport delegation in the LIMA'15 arms exhibition held in late March in Langkawi (Malaysia).
"We presented an offer to the Indian side regarding the construction in local shipyards of additional Project 11356 frigates with improved tactical and technical properties," said Ereshenko.
According to him, these offers are currently being considered by the customer. "Technical negotiations will be held on this theme in the near future," said the department head.
He emphasized that Project 11356 frigates have worked well for the Indian Navy: "There is a need for ships of this class. That is why building another series in India would be a completely logical step."
Russia has supplied India with six Project 11356 ships between 2003 and 2013. These were built at the "Baltic" factory in Saint Petersburg and the Kaliningrad "Amber" factory. The first three ships have the Russian Club-N cruise missile complex on board while the next three frigates are armed with BrahMos cruise missiles of Russian-Indian manufacture.Russia offers to build Project 11356 frigates in India's shipyards | Russia & India Report

These ships as far as i know are a part of a follow on order for the talwar class frigates which were imported from russia. As they were not built locally we dont have complete information on how to build them, hence the TOT. Can a senior member confirm this because i am not 100% sure.

Sikorsky To Make Naval Helicopters In India

Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. will make India its only assembly location outside of the U.S. for one of its military helicopters if it wins contracts to build more than 120 helicopters from the South Asian nation, the company's global defense business head said.

The S-70B Seahawk helicopters may be built either with the Tata Group with whom Sikorsky already has an alliance, or through a new partnership with another company in India, Samir Mehta, president of Sikorsky's defence systems and services department, told The Wall Street Journal.

"We are very, very confident that the venture that we have now [with Tata] coupled with new relationships that we will form in the future will not only fulfill the needs of the Indian government but allow us to again fulfill requirements from other countries," Mr. Mehta said.

Sikorsky is hoping to sell at least 139 of its S-70B Seahawk helicopters to India. In one order, on which a final decision is expected soon, it has been short listed to supply 16 of the helicopters. In a separate bid it is trying to win the order for 123 of the helicopters.

He didn't disclose the investment that would be required to build a factory. Sikorsky now makes the S-70B helicopter in Stratford, Connecticut.

Sikorsky, a unit of United Technologies Corp., was chosen by the Indian government in December to supply 16 helicopters for its navy. The contract being discussed includes an option to buy eight additional helicopters.

The Indian Navy variant of the S-70B will include advanced sonar and 360-degree-search radar, air-to-surface missiles and torpedoes for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare. It will also have the capability to fold up its blades and tail for easy storage on warships.

Mr. Mehta said he expects India to award the contract for the first 16 helicopters "in a matter of months."

A senior official in the Indian Navy who asked not to be named said "commercial discussions with Sikorsky are in the final stages and the final deal will likely be signed soon.

@akshay m, Actually the proposal seems decent. I mean why not? Let a private sector yard specialize in building frigates.

agreed but, admiral grigorovich is just a bit better than the shivaliks with a vls SAM.
not to mention frigates are for the long term. they might be used till the early 2030's.
the desin of these will get a bit dated.

now if they had offered the the admiral gorshkov class i would have wholly agreed with you

besides they can develop frigates based on the indegenous kamorta corvettes

i gave a comparison of the adm gork and adm grig frigates at post no. http://defenceforumindia.com/forum/...developments-discussions-170.html#post1016742
