Gujarat helps push India's maritime military strategy

Anand McNair, TNN Jul 7, 2012, 04.02AM IST

AHMEDABAD
: Indian Navy's request to Gujarat government to allot it a piece of land in Gandhinagar has also pushed into view India's maritime military strategy. India is a maritime country but it still has a long way to go to fully realize its maritime capabilities, a key objective of the maritime strategy. Maritime capabilities can be exploited to their full potential if maritime infrastructure exists. Fortunately, for the country, an array of maritime infrastructure already exists in Gujarat both in public and private domain, which can be utilized for furthering the country's interests. Among Indian Navy's assets in Gujarat, INS Valsura, Jamnagar operates under the training command while its facilities at Bedi Port, Okha and Porbandar are under Western Naval Command together with the UAV squadron at Porbandar airport. Indian Navy's officer incharge based in Porbandar is its points man, who is also responsible at the moment for drawing up the maritime armed force's long term plan in the state.

India finalizing mega stealth frigates' project for over Rs 50,000 crore

The seven new frigates will be ``longer, broader, faster and stealthier'' than the three 6,100-tonne Shivalik-class frigates that have a range of 5,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 18 knots.

``The new frigates will also have the 290-km BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, apart from other advanced weapons and sensors, for a greater offensive punch in all the three dimensions (air, surface and underwater),'' said the source.

According to Packer(Check Barak 8 Thread), MRSAM for Navy has been tested 2 Times out of the 6 Tests Planned and it intercepted Brahmos with 90% Hit Probability.

Indian Navy creates exclusive cyber warriors cadre

With cyber terrorism on the rise and the fight against it getting acute, the Indian Navy will soon have an exclusive cadre of cyber warriors to combat the menace and to counter the ubiquitous attacks of hostile hackers.

Why are they creating seperate cadres for all the wings of armed forces??//

Wouldn't it be more efficient to create a seperate unit of hackers that can used by all the armed forces?? But logic is rare here it seems

Even as India builds a powerful three-dimensional Navy to protect its huge geo-strategic interests in the Indian Ocean Region and beyond, as well as counter China's expanding arc of influence, it remains clear that it does not want "confrontations" on the high seas.

India remains concerned at the way China is increasingly flexing its muscles in the Asia-Pacific region but, at the same time, is not willing to be part of any US-led great game to "rebalance" forces in the region to contain China.

"We do not believe in confrontations...that is India's policy,'' said defence minister A K Antony, after commissioning the country's latest indigenous stealth frigate, the 6,100-tonne INS Sahyadri, into the Navy on Saturday.

Asked about the contentious South China Sea, where Beijing has even needled New Delhi apart from behaving aggressively in its territorial disputes with countries like Vietnam, Taiwan and the Philippines, Antony said India was a firm believer in "the unhindered freedom of navigation and freedom of passage for all" in international waters.

"Issues between countries should be sorted out by dialogue, discussion and persuasion without any confrontation,'' he added.

While it strikes a fine balance in the ongoing geo-political rivalry between the US and China, India is slowly but surely adding to its military muscle to take care of any contingencies in its primary area of strategic interest spreading from the Persian Gulf to Malacca Strait.

"Every year hereafter, Navy is going to get five warships...The need for a strong and vigilant Navy to defend our vast coastline and to maintain sea lanes of communication hardly needs any emphasis,'' said Antony.

Towards this end, Navy already has well-laid plans worth over Rs 3 lakh crore for the next 15 years, which includes 50 warships already ordered and another 45 in the planning process. Antony confirmed the over Rs 50,000 crore project to indigenously construct seven new advanced stealth frigates, as was reported by TOI earlier.

Working on Land, on water and in the air or for Land platforms, sea platforms and air platforms is different though the cyber environment surrounding all may be the same but dimensions would differ as per the platforms

India Unveils Coastal Surveillance System

India Aug. 3 launched its National Automatic Identification System (NAIS), aimed at ensuring effective coordination for coastal surveillance. Saab of Sweden and Indian defense major Elcome Marine Services built the NAIS at a cost of more than $22 million.

NAIS connects 74 sensors installed on lighthouses along the entire coastline of India that will be able to track vessels to a distance of 50 kilometers from the coast. NAIS provides real-time traffic information and the web server allows access to live data over the Internet.

"The project comprised installation of sensors and equipments along the Indian coast for regional and national control centers. Saab implemented the entire gamut of the project, which included installation, commissioning, training and support, along with their Indian partner, Elcome Marine Services," said an executive of Elcome.

Saab and Elcome signed the NAIS deal in November 2010 and the project was finally accepted by the Indian government in May 2012.

Elcome provided the overall project management, site survey, installation of equipment, sourcing of equipment locally, such as servers, workstations, switches and routers, very small aperture terminal racks, generators and civil works , claimed the Elcome executive.

Seventy four base stations have been installed in lighthouses with six regional control and two coastal control centers, in addition to one national data center. There are monitoring stations at Navy, Coast Guard and other centers under the project.
