One squadron actually, 18. Other 8 are two seaters, supposedly not compatible with carrier operations.
What? Vikrant itself can carry 26 Rafale-Ms, more if required. What about Vikramaditya ? Or IAC-2 ? No future vision ?

At least one squadron for coastal defense / anti-ship operations must have been obtained to project A&N islands.

This is a disaster. Current govt. is completely ignoramus or intentionally choosing to overlook future emerging threats and plan accordingly.

Just wait until official sources come out. This is not even official yet.

Vikrant can carry two squadrons of aircraft, but two seater version of Rafale-M doesnt exist. So if Navy wants a trainer, they will have to go with land based one.

IMO around 3 squadrons should have been ordered.

BTW for air power projection from Andamans, I think that comes under AOR of IAF, not Navy.

INS Vikrant can carry 30 fixed and rotary wing aircraft max.
If you are going plonk 26 fixed wing aircraft onto the carrier then that would little to no space for AEW, ASW, AsuW and SAR helos.

It can carry 36 according this article from HT - https://www.hindustantimes.com/indi...e-commissioned-on-sept-2-101661418602860.html

Still, 26 is way too low considering attrition, 2nd AC, and (probably) 3rd AC as well. At a minimum, 2 squadrons should have been ordered.

Count your lucky stars that this deal is even going ahead before the elections.
Instead, the Navy should count their lucky stars that Chinese CBGs are probably not going to squat in the Arabian Sea in this decade. In the next decade, Expect one Chinese CBG each in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea, and Chinese Pakistani J-10s armed with BrahMos-level anti-ship missiles to defend Karachi.

Confirmed now. The Navy has been foolishly low-balled. We are building our defense capabilities like a failed state while being the 5th largest economy.

Our enemies are two nuclear-powered states, one being a superpower, and our babus can't be bothered to loosen their batua.

Ordering more than 26 Rafales is not needed. Navy is not gonna throw away the nearly 40 MiG 29 Ks anytime soon. It will be 40 MiG-29K plus 26 Rafale-M plus = 66 Naval Fighters for a 2 carrier Navy. By the time Vikrant's sister ship is up for commission, Vikramaditya will be retired. Navy will also have TEDBF shaping up by then. So no need to spend the already tight Naval Capex on an additional Rafale-M

To base on AN islands and project power, Sukhois are any day better than Rafale. More range and better payload.

Are you questioning if Navy will indeed order Rafale for carrier-based operation ?

And the reason I am frustrated is that, despite having money, capability, and requirement, we order everything in a piecemeal manner. From artillery, helicopters, guns, jets, drones, and everything.

I think the Navy specified they are looking for an early retirement of Mig-29K.
