India nears catapult decision for second indigenous carrier

India is in the process of deciding whether its second indigenous aircraft carrier will be equipped with catapults.

The vessel, referred to within New Delhi naval circles as IAC 2 (indigenous aircraft carrier 2), will follow IAC 1, which is now being built in Kochi shipyard.

The lead ship will be similar in size to the INS Vikramaditya, formerly the Soviet carrier the Admiral Gorshkov, and displace approximately 36,000t, says a source familiar with Indian navy plans. As with the Vikramaditya, IAC 1 will launch aircraft using a "ski-ramp" structure.

IAC 2 is envisaged as a far larger warship - with a displacement of approximately 60,000t - and could enter the fleet within 10 to 15 years. Senior leaders within the navy are leaning toward deploying this ship with catapults, sources say, with a decision on whether to integrate steam catapults or an electromagnetic aircraft launch system to come as soon as July 2013. New Delhi is also considering the possibility of making IAC 2 a nuclear-powered vessel.

Indian navy plans call for a three-carrier fleet, with the service's only current example, the Viraat, to be retired in the coming years. This would allow one carrier to be stationed on each of India's coasts, while the third would undergo repairs or perform other duties such as training.

The Vikramaditya was supposed to have been delivered this month, but problems with the ship's propulsion system have reportedly delayed this until the second half of 2013. Prior to the emergence of these issues, Russian pilots in RAC MiG-29K/KUB aircraft conducted successful flight tests from the ship.

Through the use of catapults, IAC 2 would be able to operate larger, more powerful aircraft, such as the Dassault Rafale - the apparent winner of the Indian air force's medium multirole combat aircraft requirement - or the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

Catapults would reduce the deck space required for launching aircraft, while allowing them to carry more fuel and heavier payloads. Ramp-assisted operations require long take-off runs, and involve fighters burning considerable fuel just to get airborne.

The addition of catapults would also allow IAC 2 to operate fixed-wing airborne early warning and control system and battle management aircraft, such as Northrop Grumman's E-2D Hawkeye, providing the fleet with far greater situational awareness than helicopter-borne surveillance equipment.

Private sector ship-builder ABG Shipyard today said it has bagged a Rs. 485 crore order to build a cadet training vessel for the Navy. The order from the Defence Ministry to build the 110-meter vessel capable of carrying a light helicopter and achieving a top speed of 20 knots, is a repeat one, the company said in a statement issued here.

With the problems and delays with the IAC-1 and Vikramaditya. Maybe it's time India reconsider purchasing the second Queen Elizabeth Class. Then follow it with a second of the type constructed at an Indian Yard. As China is pulling ahead by the day.........

I second that thought but only the hull and powerplant. The rest of the ship has to be outfitted by us including catapult launch.

I dont think you can outfit a catapult launch system to a carrier that was not designed to carry it from the beginning

I think the most important development that the IN is waiting for is the LR-SAM. This will transform our P15A/B Into truly AAW platforms and allow them to perform the task of CBG escort in a much improved manner.
The ship launched Nirbhay is another important project for the navy. It will transform the reach of the conventional arsenel of the navy allowing us to target deep into pak behind the eastward looking radar screen.

India Set To Transfer A Newly Built Dornier Do-228 Aircraft To Seychelles

The Dornier Do-228 Transport Aircraft, made by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited [HAL], will soon be transferred for operation by the Seychelles Air Force.
The aircrafts are built in India, under license from its original manufacturers the, then, Dornier GmBH company, at HAL's Transport Aircraft Division [TAD]. This news was reported in the latest edition of HAL-Connect,

"TAD, Kanpur Division will deliver a Do-228 aircraft to Seychelles Air Force shortly. The Division conducted a four week training program for the Seychelles aircrew from November 19 to December 15, 2012, to acquaint with the operation of the aircraft. The training program was designed to cover all relevant aspects of the aircraft including airframe, power plant, avionics, auto flight, electrical power, aircraft electrical as well as mechanical system and aircraft flying procedures.

Shri D. Balasubramanian, GM and Shri V.K.Joshi , COP, TAD, Kanpur released the Pilot Operating Handbook (POH) for Seychelles DO-228 aircraft. GM also felicitated four pilots of Seychelles Air Force with training certificates. Shri Arup Chatterjee, AGM (Planning) handed over the soft copy of the training material to Seychelles air crew."

- Training on Do-228 Imparted to Seychelles Aircrew

India has had a strong & long-standing relation with the island nation, that extends into the military domain. The Indian Navy [IN] has been carrying out deterrence patrols of its Exclusive Economic Zone [EEZ], for years now, sanitising the waters of the menace of piracy, along with undertaking maritime surveys. Even as Seychelles own aircraft, which India is gifting it, along with 2 Chetak Helicopters, was being built, IN's own Do-228 had been stationed there, carrying out tasks, essentially anti-piracy related, which this new plane will perform. Besides this, India has been regularly undertaking training programmes for their security & defence personals. A few years back, an agreement was signed, whereby India would impart training to their Special Forces Unit in carrying out missions like deep sea diving, VIP protection & undertaking Special Forces-specific operations, if need arises. It is also going to install a radar system estimated to be worth $10 million USD. In all likelihood, it would be linked to India's own radar chain, as has said to have been done with the ones set up in Maldives. Besides this, India has also pledged $5 million USD for building up Seychelles' capability to fight the menace of piracy on its own - a major threat to the tourism-dependant nation.
