Congratulation on the great achievement. But I would like to mention that the Beidou System of China already covered the whole India territory and the ocean to her south several years ago.
Well, this one would be on a geosynchronous orbit covering the south china sea.

The GPS already covers the whole planet and GLONASS is far superior to Beidou and India has access to military grade signals.

GAGAN will augment IRNSS, once fully operational. Gagan enables us to have civilian grade navigation signals via 2 (+1 spare) geostationary satellites of the entire eastern hemisphere. Better still, it can hop carriers and utilize IRNSS, GPS, Galileo & GLONASS civilian signals. So if any 1, 2 or 3 careers are blacked out or jammed, we still can navigate in civilian quality.

Here are the placements of the geostationary and geosynchronous locations of the satellites based on coordinates released by ISRO. The geosynchronous one above Indonesia was launched yesterday.



Congrats to ISRO and all, its coverage can be extended, it was designed keeping that in mind.

Well, we have our own system now, as well.

Another door which was previously shut for us, just opened up.

And it was all possible due to you gentlemen in China.If you were not around spreading peace and good cheer around the neighborhood, we probably would not have done this.So thanks Guys, keep up the good Work!!

Am no guru, but AFAIK...

No, for any users minimum 3 satellites are needed for navigation. Navigation works on the principle of triangulation of atomic clocks onboard the satellites which measures the nano seconds it takes for the signal to reach the user from the satellite, calculates its distance from the satellite, matches it with the distance from 2 other satellites and then determines the user's position. Change in position after each passing second determines the direction and speed of travel.

Question to Gurus: can the GPS type service be available (atleast for strategic users) with launch of single satellite?

watched it on DD last night. Textbook launch. Satellite injected into precise orbit.

Heard the commentators at ISRO last night that the service will be available once all 7 satellites are in orbit.

which satellite then will be launched by France. Second how a geostatonary satellite is launched by our PSLV.

@Coalmine PSLV can place a payload of limited weight at geostationary orbit.

India should develop its own SKYLON spacecraft so that we can launch new satellites in space and retrieve old satellites at a much cheaper rate.

I have heard they have got only a small portion of the required funds to develop and build Skylon spacecraft. ISRO could use these type of spacecrafts with technology transfer from Britain.

Russia had also tried to put Glonass satellite in orbit yesterday but rocket carrying it exploded.

there economy is in tail spin, they cannot afford this global (GPS) like system. I think GLONASS won't happen just like that.

Orbit raising manoeuvers completed with fifth Apogee Motor Firing (AMF) on July 06, 2013 at 16:57 hrs (IST) and performance is normal.

Satellite is in Geo-Synchronous Orbit (GSO) with 27 deg inclination at 44 deg E longitude.

Present orbital parameters are : apogee 35870 km, perigee 35484 km and orbital period is 23h 50m.

All the spacecraft subsystem are evaluated and functioning normal.

LOL! that is just ignorant my friend. A single failure does not translate to incompetent organization. When compared to the sheer scale and experience gathered by the Soviet and Russian(&eastern black) space organizations we are just kids.
Consider this...the rocket that exploded there is called the Proton-M which has

Failures 4
Partial failures 4
This is JUST ONE ROCKET. When you consider the family of Proton rockets...the first orbital flight of proton was achieved in the year 1965 India did not have even have a space program then. This is what Wiki has to say

The first Proton rocket was launched in 1965 and the launch system is still in use as of 2013, which makes it one of the most successful heavy boosters in the history of spaceflight.

And this was the rocket that launched the MIR space station into space.
e last time a Proton failed in first stage powered flight was in 1982.

Dont get me wrong I am proud of ISRO but let put things in prespective thats all.
