In an effort to prepare the Indian Armed Forces against the 'emerging axis' between Pakistan and China, the Indian Defense Ministry is seeking an additional INR 45,716 Cr (USD 8.5 Billion) over the 2012-13 budgetary allocation of INR 193,407 Cr (USD 39 Billion) taking the total of INR 239,123 Cr (USD 44.7 Billion).

Defense Minister A K Antony is now requesting the additional eight billion because of the "the changing security scenario" involving China and Pakistan.

Speaking in upper house of the Indian Parliament on Monday, Antony said, "The growing proximity of China and Pakistan is a cause of worry. We have to take a second look at the defence budget in light of the changing threat perceptions".

The Indian Army plans to build up combat units in its northern border with China and station fighter jets there besides improving its transport and command and control there in view of the Chinese threat.

Not $8.5Billion but $45Billion a year and rising.

Yeah. For China that's enough, especially considering Taiwan with a budget of around $10Billion finds it more than sufficient to the point that they actually scaled back last year.

FYI, Pak's entire defence budget is a paltry $6.5Billion.

Yes, because 1: Taiwan has the military backup of USA while india doesn't.
2: Taiwan, to certain extent, believes that they can seek a peace agreement with mainland in near future. They are seeing mainland as an emerging market more than a growing military threat.

How much of your defense allocation goes to pay the largest standing army in the world. What percentage of the budget is used to acquire new technology?
Indian strategy is to pay it's way into equipment and concurrent offsets. The offsets plan is working well for India. I am not going to disclose how. You will be surprised how much money can buy if you don't intent to out compete your sellers producing knockoffs. The fact of the matter is every country in the world will sell stuff to India on technology transfer today. It may be because we abide by intellectual property terms or they consider us not a threat in the future market place. You can consider it the latter.

As far as certain critical areas in defense are concerned, India has clearly outperformed China. I won't say which areas. You can stay smug and call it all bluffs. Welcome to the new world.

yes, we certainly talked in 1962.

no action, just talk talk talk.
Like our talk in the 1967 Chola incident where you retreated from sikkim ?
Probably "talk talk" by India during the 1987 incident.

good first step, what we should urgently want to do is to induct weapons system at fast rate. China is clear, serious and present threat to us and as time passes, we are dealing with it and gaining capabilities to deter any foolish moves from their part.
