PM Modi said Indian media also needs to go global at a time when the country enjoys a "very strong presence" at almost every international body.

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today that not only Indian products, but India's voice too is becoming more global with the world paying more attention to the country.

Inaugurating Patrika Gate in Jaipur and releasing two books authored by Patrika Group Chairman Gulab Kothari through a video conference, PM Modi said Indian media also needs to go global at a time when the country enjoys a "very strong presence" at almost every international body.

"Our newspapers and magazines should have global reputation. We should reach digitally across the world in this digital age. Indian institutions should give away literary awards like they are given in different parts of the world. This is the need of the hour and necessary for the country," he said.

The Prime Minister also lauded the country's media for serving people in an "unprecedented way" by spreading awareness on the COVID-19 pandemic and by analysing government works and pointing out their shortcomings.

Though the media is also criticised at times, more so in this age of social media, but everybody needs to learn from criticism, he said, adding this is what makes India's democracy strong.

Be it his government's campaign to build toilets or 'Swachh Bharat' mission or 'Ujjwala' scheme, which gives cooking gas cylinders free to poor women, or the project to supply piped water to every household, the media has worked to spread awareness, the Prime Minister said, while also lauding it for its role in shaping the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' mission.

Praising Mr Kothari's books - 'Samvad Upanishad' and 'Akshar Yatra', for their attempt to preserve and promote Indian culture, traditions and philosophy, he hoped that the current generation which "depends on Google guru" will read them.

"In this age of text and tweet, it is more imperative that our new generation is not weaned away from gaining serious knowledge," he said, asking people to keep a place in house for books and reading them in the same way they reserve some space for worship.

Family members should inculcate the habit of reading books by spending some time reading a few pages everyday, he said

Finally. They gave some thought to this. I have been saying this for so long. Not only does our media needs to go global. We also need to setup some International Human Rights Oganisation that would focus more keenly on the human rights issues in our adversaries nations, some World Health Organistation parallel to others international forums. They use their media and international organisations to propagate against us. We need to answer in same manner.

Sorry to say this but the kind of media we have it's best that we remain in India ..India right now has only two types of media outlets
1 Sophisticated but <language> Anti national
2 Nationalist but filmy , dramatic , without any proper substance ..

Our private news walas are <language> & bhadwas, they will sell india internationally.
Rather DD should be rebooted and rebranded as a modern media company, and be pushed internationally.
Russia has RT
China has CGTN
Turkey has TRT World
Qatar has Al Jazeera
Anglos have BBC
It's high time we have our own gobal media company that tells India's side of the story to the world.

Arnab Goswami will bring guests from all the world and will make them sit. Will not allow him/her to utter a word and the guests will do whatever they want. Just like that lady who was eating on his live show.

I don't think we are gonna lose anything by the not so pro-India media going international. We just have to ensure that all kind of voices, neutral, pro as well as anti media are present there which will not affect our policies but add up to to free reporting. And they will be covering all global events and conflicts. It seems like negative thinking that indian media will sell or that they are actually capable. American media has two primary wings that likes to bash United States and the other that speaks the state narrative while some try to maintain a neutral stance. The same with UK. We gotta do the same. Becoming a chicken isn't going to serve us.

I agree with the idea of rebooting and rebranding DD into an international media house.

I stopped watching news in india since 2012 (when the media went shit crazy over mayan calendar) . I used to like NDTV but they are dangerously anti india
Now I started watching print but it is following same trajectory as NDTV
So no news outlets in India is worth watching

This is best option, other channels even if they are nationalistic and biased towards us will probably put an obvious bad taste in the foreigners mouth.

We must aim for the rt feel ,for that we must we must revamp dd international to make it look like it comes from the same decade.it is good in some ways that other than wion,I don't see any regional channels in anyone foreigners radar as they will feel really wierd to someone from outside.

Centre to set up ‘BBC-like’ channel to push India view

At a time when the Indian government has been facing severe criticism in the international media, the national public broadcaster Prasar Bharati has floated a tender for a consultant to come up with a plan to launch a channel with an international presence. According to Prasar Bharati officials, the tender is not a knee-jerk reaction and the idea has existed for a long time.

The invitation for Expression of Interest was floated on May 13 for a consultancy service to come up with a detailed project report “on establishment of DD International”. The EOI stated: “In view of the strategic objective to build a global presence for Doordarshan and to establish an international voice for India, it is envisaged to establish DD International”. Further, it said that the EOI “is being issued for a Detailed Project Report (DPR) from reputed global consultants with experience in advising international broadcasters/media houses on projects of this nature”.

Thank God they are doing this finally.
Also good it is through a "consultant" and not using thakela DD PSU babu employees.
Just hope the consultant firm doesn't have an rNDTV or India Today background.
