I was thinking this is a country where there are parts of the country people earn just a few pounds a hour compared to us, living in poor conditions and yet they spend millions or billions on space program.....or at war with the neighbours. What is more important?

Whislt I can not deny the staggering feat of human power here- India should really really concentrate on its on population first before worrying about sending an orbitor to Mars, how will this help the 100's or millions in poverty in India, or the millions and millions who live in immediate flood risk on the ganges. I'm not anti space exploration, and sure American, Russia, and Europe have economic problems to sort but nothing like the scale of Indias woes for 95% of their population. I cannot wait to see a person walk on Mars or even the moon again, but I cant help but think Indias funds are mispent here.

Congratulations India for becoming the FIRST Asian Nation to have reached Mars and making History! I see the british media has kept a lid on this subject and have as usual make a huge deal about yet another war which is fast becoming tedious to watch!

About time we stopped sending them millions of £s in foreign aid then, not that it will happen, I think perhaps there's a commission feed back we are not aware of with these foreign aid payments.

"It won't land on Mars, but will use five scientific instruments to gather data about the planet's surface and atmosphere. The 3,000-pound spacecraft isn't as technologically complex as those launched by the US and Russia, but reaching orbit is no small feat."

Government needs to take some hard decisions and ban channels like BBC and CNN. No need to give them air time on Indian airwaves anymore.Interesting.

"Sexualisation" of women
In other news, a new UN-sponsored study says sexualisation of women features heavily in Indian movies with less representation of strong roles, reports The Economic Times.
The study, conducted by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, and supported by UN Women and The Rockefeller Foundation, has looked at female characters in popular cinema from around the world.
India has the maximum portrayals of attractive women in its films and at least 35% of female characters are shown with some degree of nudity, it says.
The study adds that Indian movies very rarely show women in "significant speaking roles", or "working as engineers and scientists".
And finally, the Indian cabinet is set to approve a large-scale programme to promote cleanliness in the country, the Hindustan Times reports.
The scheme, to be launched in October, aims to provide a toilet in every household in the country and make a "Clean India" by 2019, it adds.
As part of the initiative, the government will build toilets in 10.4 million homes and 500,000 public toilets in urban areas, as well as 88 million toilets in rural areas.
The initiative is significant as a large number of Indians still do not have easy access to proper sanitation, the paper explains.
According to the 2011 census data, 12% out of the 67 million households in urban India defecate in the open, says Hindustan Times.

Must be the new Western trend to add non-related topics that ail India when trying to "report" on Indian achievements.
