Four Indian astronauts undergoing generic space flight training in Russia as part of Gaganyaan Programme nearing completion: Dr Jitendra Singh

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr.Jitendra Singh said that four Indian astronaut candidates are currently undergoing generic space flight training in Russia as part of GaganyaanProgramme. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today, he said, the astronaut training activities in Russia are nearing completion. Major modules such as survival training (snow, water and steppe), parabolic flights, theoretical classes on orbital mechanics, astro-navigation and some Soyuz systems have been completed.

DrJitendra Singh said, Government of India has made reforms in Space sector by enabling private sector participation in Space activities. He said, the intention is to provide level playing field for private companies in satellites, launches and space-based services, to bring in predictable policy and regulatory environment to private players, to provide access to ISRO facilities and other relevant assets to improve their capacities, to provide opportunities in selected areas of planetary exploration, outer space travel, etc. to private sector and to liberalize the existing geo-spatial data policy for providing remote-sensing data to entrepreneurs.

DrJitendra Singh said that PSLV-C51 carried Amazonia-1 optical earth observation satellite of National Institute of Space Research of Brazil along with 18 small satellites on February 28, 2021.

Gaganyaan: Astronauts clear all tests, Russia training to end this month

BENGALURU: The four Indian astronaut-elects training in Moscow for Gaganyaan are likely to complete their Russia training by the end of this month, following which the Indian space research organisation (Isro) will decide about their return.
Dmitry Loskutov, director general, Glavkosmos, the organisation with whom Isro has a contract for astronaut training told TOI, "Indian astronauts are at the final stage of training. They successfully studied the systems of the Soyuz MS crewed spacecraft, and confirmed their knowledge and skills passing all the necessary tests."
At present, Loskutov added, the Indian astronauts apply the knowledge and skills they have gained by practicing on the integrated simulator of the Soyuz MS crewed spacecraft.
"No special final exam is required – they passed all the tests and exams in the process of their preparation," he said, adding that the training programme in Russia will be completed no later than the end of March and that Isro will determine when they are supposed to return to India.
On the status of the space suit that is being designed for the Indian astronauts, he said, "The production of spacesuits is carried out in strict accordance with the approved schedule. There are no alterations of the production deadlines."
According to Isro, which is planning to launch the first uncrewed mission as part of Gaganyaan in December 2021, hardware realisation is in advanced stage for ground test and first unmanned mission.
The space agency has already completed the preliminary design review of various human centric systems such as Space food and potable water, crew health monitoring system, emergency survival kit, crew medical kit, etc, while qualification tests of liquid engines as part of human rating of launch vehicle has commenced.
As reported by TOI earlier, upon their return from Russia, the four astronaut-elects will have a rigorous schedule and are likely to train in Bengaluru, Mumbai and Pune. While IAF’s Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM) in Bengaluru will provide some training the Indian army’s Army Sports Institute (ASI) in Pune and navy’s Institute of Naval Medicine (INM), Mumbai are also expected to be roped in.
In Bengaluru, Isro will be commissioning at least one simulator, while other facilities for training are also being put in place. Isro will have to keep them in the best shape while also providing mission-specific training, including medical training, psychological training, advanced training, and flight simulation training.
Further, among the major modules completed in Russia are survival training — snow, water and steppe — parabolic flights, theoretical classes on orbital mechanics, astro-navigation and some Soyuz systems.

Dmitry Rogozin met with Indian cosmonaut candidates
On March 22, 2021, Roscosmos Director General Dmitry Rogozin met with Indian cosmonaut candidates who successfully completed general space training in Russia. The meeting was also attended by the Ambassador of India to the Russian Federation, Mr. D.B. Venkatesh Varma and representatives of Roscosmos subsidiaries, who participated in the training of Indian cosmonaut candidates.
The Ambassador of the Republic of India thanked Dmitry Rogozin for supporting the training program for Indian cosmonauts. The contract to train Indian space flight candidates was signed on June 27, 2019 by the Glavkosmos company (part of Roscosmos) and the Human Space Flight Centre under Indian Space Research Organisation. On February 10, 2020, the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center began the planned training of Indian cosmonaut candidates.

They will do training within Gaganyaan module and indigenous training centre under construction.

More important, their experience will be used by India to train others, their controls they learnt in Russian Soyuz will be seen in Gaganyaan too.

Just as Chinese aren't as frequent flyers as Americans and Russians are given their recent entry in 2003, Indians will be having even lower manned spaceflight frequency since Chinese have a space station now they can dock on unlike us.
We so far has only 4 trained astronauts and are only dependent upon their inputs only (if self sufficiency is adopted today) for instructing other trainees as well as building new training centres or formulating our own Vyomanuat training program.

We can't really do much of experiments on humans since we are newbies and noobs in manned spaceflight technology and our experience is even behind Europeans and Japanese since they at least get to fly on American missions unlike us.

We will need to build a small space station like SkyLab ASAP after first few manned flights and exercise multi-week long human spaceflights, spacecraft dockings and safely sending/bringing humans. It would need a decade of human spaceflight experience before running large scale space station programs like Salyut or Mir and landing humans on moon. And I'm not assuming how much delay a failure would add (even worse if there is a loss of lives which has happened to US & USSR).

Meanwhile there will be a Sino-Russian flag on Moon even before 2040. NASA with JAXA and ESA would be running multiple stations to train humans for Mars landing.

If I bookmark this post for me an aerospace engineer aspirant as a time capsule, this is 23 March 2021. Republic of India is about enter era of human spaceflight. India right now has GSLV Mk III, a rocket similar to Titan IIIC, 4 people trained from Russia for space situational awareness and a new crewed spacecraft which at least has demonstrated safe re-entry capabilities into earth in 2007. Nothing more than it.

It's just 26 years from 2047 when independence will cross 100 years. Doesn't seem we would be able to land people on moon.

I will check and re-read my post after every milestone to see how it's been.

Translated from Telugu (OneIndia.com)
Gaganyaan: Another key chapter that ended: Indian astronauts in Russia for a year
New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has taken another crucial step in ISRO's ambitious Gaganyan mission. Another phase of the mission, which is intended for manned spaceflight, is over. The astronauts selected for this project have completed their training. Their training continued for a year in Russia. Russia announces completion of 365-day astronaut training.
DG reveals training is over
ISRO will launch the mission next year to send astronauts into space via the Orbital spacecraft. Geozdny trained Indian astronauts at the Russian Space Center in Gorodok City, near Moscow. Director General Dmitry Rogozin said their training period was over. Russia's news agency Sputnik's Telegram channel aired an article to this effect. He said he met the Indian astronauts in the evening and informed them that their training period was over.
Agreement with Russia in 2019 ..
The information was also passed on to the Indian Embassy in Russia. He said they were ready to undertake more space launches and missions with India in the future. In June 2019, ISRO reached an agreement with Glovcosmos, a Russian latch service provider, to provide essential training to Indian astronauts. It is learned that ISRO has selected four pilots from the Air Force to go into space.
Kovid is trouble ..
One of them was a group captain and three were wing commanders. The training started on February 10 last year. The lockdown imposed during the corona virus outbreak caused some disruptions during training. However- they successfully completed space training. After returning home they will have to take training for another stage. They are required to participate in module specific training.
Rs. 10 thousand crores
This module was developed by ISRO with its own knowledge. The central government has allocated Rs 10,000 crore for ISRO's Gaganyan mission to carry out manned space research. ISRO will undertake this mission in 2022. The date for the launch of the manned spaceflight is yet to be decided. This is the first time that ISRO has undertaken such a project. As a result, there was growing interest in Mission Gaganyan across the country.

I prefer adhering to keep their names confidential. I have to write articles so I can draft things at least before their names are officially released

PS beyond my hobbies, I will keep mouth shut. I just wish to know.

Name of one pilot was revealed by a news article. But I think lets wait till Isro itself will unveil their name. Indian American astronaut Raja recently met 4 of them in Russia, when all of them were doing training.

But situation is very critical on part of ISRO. Now think Nauts are ready but ISRO platform not ready. Until what they will do, just sit 2-3 years and loose all the learnings. Its not better to have a seat on IIS until ready. Better they have some experience.

It seems ISRO not managing timelines efficiently.

Their training in ISRO's modules is pending yet. So them training for an year or two more won't hurt but benefit ISRO in developing them better as well as new training program.

Further, it wasn't ISRO's managerial failure but mess created by CCP virus. Modi's 2022 target was too rushy. ISRO has got room for proper procedure qualification now.

Look at DRDO , most of the tests happened in corona period. Before we usually say DRDO means beaurecracy. Now see DRDO becomes more efficient and result oriented. Now look at ISRO efficiency. Even GISAT-1 launch has no ending date. Gaganyaan is way heavy project.

As told before a hundred times, nature of jobs for ISRO and DRDO is different.
DRDO has small and hundreds of low profile projects with diverse profiles. Everything won't stop there at once.

ISRO's every launch has a multi-month and sometimes even an year long separate production projects in ISRO's own as well as vendor factory. Everytime, they have to engage 1000+ people of related expertise for months for every launch. Since its goal is defined, ISRO has functioned more consistently than DRDO. But once it's operations are strangulated, they are strangulated as it is.

What do you think, how easy its for a factory to achieve its one year target in 4-5 months? They yet are doing it.

They weren't idle either, when other factories were busy painting their walls and pesting their workshops probably, ISRO refurbished launch pad for increased launch frequency taking advantage of empty pad, now we will see 10+ launches every year (if factory doesn't delay them).

i am damn sure woman fighter pilot (MiG-21 Bison) Avani Chaturvedi is the female gaganaut here in the group...

remember when Modi announced on red fort..."bharat mata ka beta ya fir beti"

last republic day parade...it was Bhavana Kanth who represented woman fighter pilots of IAF not avani and she has been out of camera's reach from at least 2-3 years now:cool3::cool3::cool3::cool3::cool3::cool3::notsure::notsure::notsure:

Avani Chaturvedi just got deployed on duty last month. Those 4 astronauts have been in Russia for one year and still are there.

ISRO to said that they are likely to send a girl but later dismissed possibility. They may be training but again.
News agency has confirmed that there are 1 captain + 3 wing commanders.
So none of Mohana, Avni, Bhavana, Gunjan or Minty will be there. (Lieutenants)
Indian Air Force has no female captain yet and has only one female wing commander Shaliza Dhami.
But she didn't clearly go to Russia for training.
