Why are all of the new highways only 2-lanes? If the authorities were truly planning for the future, the highways should have been atleast 6 and optimally 8 lanes. Infrastructure planning is done with growth forecasts for the next 50 years in mind....in less than 2 decades, these highways will be clogged with automobiles, and then are you going to build a national highway system again? Those politicians and babus need to come to North America to take lessons on infrastructure development, right now, they are just wasting public money.

Guys, these are the kinds of highways India needs:

Highway 401 in Canada:

Those piddly 2 lane highways will be jammed within 5 or 10 years. Also, the highway design is really poor. What happens when a vehicle breaks down in one lane? That entire lane will be blocked, leading to chaos and more traffic jams. That's why there should be an extra left lane that is closed to regular traffic, only to be used in case of emergencies or vehicle breakdowns etc. The road dividers also need to be made of reinforced concrete, not pretty bushes if they are to prevent a car from hurtling across the "barrier".

The Mumbai-Pune highway looks OK, the others look too shoddy and not well planned at all.
