Government Is Launching Its Own Operating System Replacing Microsoft Windows

Indian govt to have its own operating system for official use. A highly improved and secured version of BOSS (Bharat Operating System Solutions) has been developed by C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing). Indian government is all set to release BOSS this month.

The new OS is believed to have been launched to overcome the vulnerabilities that exist in government cyberspace resulting in a number of countless attacks by hackers.

BOSS, which is a linux distribution, is developed with the help of Gujarat Technical University, DRDO and some other private computer manufacturers.

If at all govt. replaces MS Windows with this indigenously customized Linux OS, govt. is going to save huge amount money and get rid of MS licensing part.

However, replacing Windows would be a humongous task. Moreover, they need to train personnels who would use Linux going forward. For a layman, shifting from windows to Linux would not be a easy task and govt. needs to think of replacing Windows applications as well since, Windows applications do not run on Linux.

In any case, this is good move!

At last, govt. is taking right steps to counter cyber attacks and safe guard it's network.

Changing OS won't do much good. They need to change the network adapters on all government computers. Realtek has links to PLA, so regardless of the OS, it could offer a backdoor to Chinese spooks. I have Intel and Mellanox NICs on all my machines.

In andhra and Telangana all govt laptops have pre-installed Linux on them, they are managing quite well. This has been going on from 2 years.
