wasn't the next batch of 6-9 indegeneous aewcs supposed to be based on a bigger platform than embraer 145?

A bigger platform is not required. The indigenous AWACS aren't carrying data processing systems on board like the Phalcon. So, the power requirement and space are enough if we are only carrying radar and some ELINT, SIGINT equipment.

We will need a bigger aircraft once we reach phase 3 of the project. How many of the Emb-145 aircraft are required is currently unknown.

why the AAAU is bent along the fore axis? is it to avoid antenna from getting blocked by the engines in the aft(rear)? where as Erieye balace beam antenna is horizontal or level. it runs on turboprops and the engines appear to be away from the antenna ..

Embaer Readies 145 for Indian AEW&C



At Sao Jose dos Campos in Brazil on Feb. 21, Embraer unveiled the first of three EMB-145s built as platforms for India's indigenous airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) system.

The AEW&C mission system, with its active-array radar, is under development by the Center for Air Borne Systems (CABS) in Bangalaru, part of India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Although it looks similar to the Saab Erieye radar on Embraer's existing EMB-145 AEW&C, supplied to Brazil (top photo below), Greece and Mexico, the phased-array antenna mounted above the fuselage is shorter and deeper, and the supports much beefier.

DRDO and CABS officials at the unveiling say the antenna is deeper because the transmit/receive modules for the IFF are integrated into the antenna, running along the bottom of the array of transmit/receive modules for the radar.

Changes to the EMB-145 platform for the Indian program include installing an in-flight refueling probe, a new electrical system with a second APU just to power the radar and a new cooling system. The radome atop above the forward fuselage is for stacom and the fairings on the sides of the fuselage are for ESM antennas.

(The bump under the fuselage, between the gear, looks like a comms antenna but is in fact a skid to protect the extra internal fuel tanks in a wheels-up landing - it is fitted to Embarer's Legacy bizjet version of the ERJ-135.)

Plenty of India defense program run late, but DRDO director general V K Saraswat says the AEW&C program is on schedule. The radar is undergoing rooftop tests at CABS and the building blocks of the mission system are being tested in the lab, he says.

Embraer will flight-test the EMB-145 platform in Brazil, and is scheduled to deliver the first aircraft to India in August for integration of the mission system. The fully configured aircraft is planned to fly next year, says Saraswat.

Once development is complete, the three EMB-145 AEW&Cs are to be delivered to the Indian air force in 2014 to operate alongside its larger Beriev A-50 AEW&C platforms, which carry the Israeli Elta Phalcon phased-array radar.

good news but this drdo program is late as its always with drdo.
But i hope it succedes in its goal

how can they be at par with phalcons when they are less than half its size...??they are small AWACS which will used to fill the gaps where phalcons cant

'The first Embraer plane (EMB-1451) will land in India by June-end after its power units have been connected to our airborne early warning radar fitted atop. Integration of its sub-systems will begin in July for user trials,' the defence minister's Scientific Advisor V.K. Saraswat told reporters here Saturday.
After the first plane was rolled out in February, the primary radar, identification-friend-or-foe (IFF) interrogator, communications and electronic intelligence receivers and data-processing systems are being integrated with the fuselage,' Saraswat said on the margins of the fifth Air Chief Marshal L.M. Katre memorial lecture here.

Cassidian help comes as a boost to AEW&C program

A senior CABS official tells Aviation Week that Cassidian was brought in as a consultant in January. "Many complex systems will have integration issues and get bogged down by protracted flight testing and evaluation," the official says. "We hope to dovetail the experience of the Cassidian team into the program so as to compress time schedules." The Cassidian team is expected to stay with CABS until the end of the program. "They are helping us in evolving [the] most optimized ways of testing the systems," the official says.

I hear the Indian air force is on a gripe again because the CABS AEW&C platform dose not have the range or the whole 360 scan capability as the phalcon . It is disturbing the Indian Armed forces tendency to disparage or shoot down any home grown technology to think they were happy with a home grown platform before and to have it mounted on an Avro i think ...., when India didn't have the money . They should help to come up with better design in conjunction with CABS or DRDO or give clear parameters as to what they require instead of just the tendency to keep moving the technical requirement line when the project is close to completion , or the knee jerk reaction to homegrown tech being inferior.
Btw Nitesh i thought DRDO/CABS had the indigenous AEW&C work pretty much wrapped up so why invite Cassidian for integration work i thought the range and antenna array all were pretty much done , so evolve what?

Bangalore: India's prying plane is ready. Called the Airborne Early Warning & Control System (AEW&CS), this tech beast comes in the form of a modified Embraer aircraft (EMB-145 I). Sources confirm to The New Indian Express that the first flight is officially scheduled on December 7 in Brazil. The Centre for Air Borne Systems (CABS), a Bangalore-based less-talked-about wing of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is developing systems to make the EMB-145 I a mean machine.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) will receive three such platforms in the next three years. The integration on ground-based systems on the lines of specifications, including the seating arrangements, is currently on at CABS. The first aircraft will make a touchdown in Bangalore coming June, with the second and third expected in October 2012 and December 2013 respectively. "They (CABS) will need at least six months to integrate the sub-systems (total seven), after the first EMB-145 Iarrives," sources said.
Once operational, India will join an exclusive club of nations owning home-grown eye in the sky systems. Currently, Wedge Tail (USA-Boeing), Phalcon (Israel-IAI) and Erieye (Sweden-Ericsson) are world leaders in prying-from-the-top-technology. India had inked a pact with Brazil in 2008 to modify the Embraer so as to integrate the Active Array Antenna Unit (AAAU) on the aircraft's fuselage. The platform could detect, identify and classify threats present in the surveillance areas and act as a command and control centre to support air operations. The project comes with an updated price tag of (to include new features for the IAF) of Rs 2,157 crore.
In an extremely crisp response to an Express email query, CABS Director S Christopher could only confirm that an Indian delegation is traveling to Brazil in the first week of June. When this paper spoke to G. Elangovan, DRDO's Chief Controller (Avionics) in Delhi, he said that the EMB-145 I will be a very cost-effective and cheapest platform, carrying mission systems, radar, communication units and electronic warfare systems.
The EMB-145 I will boost India's network-centric warfare capabilities. Apart from surveillance duties, it could track aircraft, UAVS and even detect radar signals. It has the ability to scan up to 400 km, giving the IAF recognized air situations thereby enabling battle field management. The aircraft can operate with a maximum crew of 12 people, including operators, rest crew, pilot, co-pilot and flight test engineer. It can fly non-stop for 10-12 hours with mid-air-refueling.
DRDO's earlier attempt to make a surveillance platform (Project Guardian/Airawat) met with disaster when the HS-748 turboprop test-bed aircraft crashed in 1999, killing several scientists and engineers.

yeah its indian but integration of system was to be done by brazil so guess to be safe 1st flight is in Brazil....
it will fly with dummy once all things check out, it will come to India then dummy will be removed and real electronics would be put in place, BTW they have put the radar on high rise in India to check it.

so brazil will not do system integration along with CABS...?

btw 400 km range...thats a killer....
