This is right approach. This is the fastest to attract huge capital for indian companies by giving them monopoly in this segment hwere specs are being quite standard and medicore now .
More like giving base to Indian companies. Start with small and improve upon it and slowly climb up the ladder. My concern is most Indian companies once they find their comfort zone and are making money, they will never invest in R & D. They eventually stagnate and die. A good example I can find is this one.

Remember this bicycle?

These arseholes started operations in 1950 and they reached their peak in 1965 producing 40 Lakh bicycles per year. In all their pathetic existence forget about incorporating new technologies and producing different product lines, they barely changed the design of the bicycle. There was one product and that product barely had changed than the one produced in 1950.

Finally, they had to shut down in 2020. I mean fuck, the fact that some people were even buying this abomination until 2020 itself is an astonishment to me.

Atmanirbhar Bharat is not something that was started today,it started even before the independence.
Remember reading the swadeshi movement started by Mahatma Gandhi in History Text Books?

And then from 1947 till 1991, India was dominated by homegrown industries.
Most of them collapsed because they could not survive the competition that came after liberalization.
My parent's first TV,Mobile Phone,Fridge and Washing machine were all made in India.
What a joke! My mom told me stories how everyone in our para was elated when my grandfather imported a Sony trinitron colour TV from Japan although it wasn't anything new at that time globally. All locally manufactured products were substandard.

I'd rather get a made in India iPhone at launch than a horrible obsolete phone due to closed economy.

So Karnatakas own vidharba.

Goes to show India is like that teacher who pushes the bright kids of the class and abandons the mediocre ones.

Surprising it's the opposite in Tamil Nadu.

For TN the red region is more or less the infamous Delta region. Consists of Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam. Also in near south is Pudukottai, Sivagangai and Ramnad District.

Reasons for Red in Delta.

Entirely Agriculture based area with significant farmers vote bank, Development of infra is tricky because majority of Farmers are pretty not interested in selling it. Eg. NH are still two lanes in these areas. No proper industrial base and also poor Education sector.

As for Pudukottai it is a dry state with water scarcity while Trichy somehow developed Pudukottai could not replicate it. Same with Sivagangai and Ramnad district.

What you said is true

Atlas are part of erstwhile group like C K birla, Videocon, BPL, Premier, Onida etc. were thrived in License raj but when Liberalization hits folded and becomes fringe players with each of them going on crisis in different years.

Second range consists of Micromax, Lava, XOLO, Karbonn, Celkon, Intex, Spice, Smartron, Vu etc. All these guys are more or less resellers selling ODM Products as their with no control in quality of products. Resulted in complete annihilation in Indian market. Today Micromax and Lava are still trying to bring products but still struggling while others are in either bankruptcy or shut their shop.

The third group is current boys like Boat, Noise, Ptron. Survived the Chinese attack by relying on customer support and better marketing. But glaring holes like no production in India, no R&D to show. Future: May face the same fate as smart phone manufacturers if Chinese adapted to it. To survive invest in Indian supply chain and invest in good R&D and also focus to sell products globally.

Boat and Noise are budget segment you can't expect them to bring doing BOSE level stuff without paying them that money. They are here to stay for the long run also i think we can look forward to establishing contract scale manufacturing plants like those in China preferably in UP. You could get a custom phone made there but if you have to manufacture something you will have to own the factory manage the workers it adds alot of cost and acts as a big barrier to hardware startups.

It seems you haven't properly studied history books. When Gandhi talked about Swadeshi movement he meant complete deindustrialization. He hated all industries and machines with a passion. He wanted to bring humanity back to stone ages.

Before 1991 India was deindustrialized. It was almost impossible for anyone to set up industry because of socialist planned economy nonsense that came from Nehru Gandhi duo's failed economic idealisms. Even Industries left behind by British where nationalised and almost destroyed.

Today a lot more products are made in India compared to those times. Even foreign companies are now manufacturing in India and buying components from small Indian companies.

Sorry to burst your nostalgic bubble but there was never a time in Independent India's history when India was some kind of manufacturing powerhouse before 1991.

The Atmanirbhar Bharat Modi ji started is the first ever holistic and realistic approch towards slowly reducing reliance on foreign goods.

BTW first mobile phone bought by you was Indian??? or are you just throwing that for sake of argument.
reminder, in one of his works, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi mentioned that (as per him) the best machine humans ever produced was...

...

...

a sewing machine (he pointed at certain model of then Singer brand paddle powered one)...

under Gandhian economical model, at maxx we could've turned this country into a giant sweatshop like thing, making garments and (hopefully) exporting it and so...since all other machinery is ;sinful; and what not 🤷‍♂️
Imagine widespread bangladesh style clothing and garments industry here but at low to maxx mid level...

but in contrast of anti-technology Gandhi (probably Ted Kaczynski would've approved lol) we got pro-technology, pro-industry BUT anti-businessmen-anti-industrialist Jawaharlal Kaul aka allahbad ke nehar wale...

Ya'll Nibbiars The unconfirmed news but the Mahindra is in talks to purchase the Ford Tamil Nadu Plant and the GMs Talegaon Maharashtra plant. If true then there are two potential buyers for the TN plant despite being old.

A different era.
Govt is today has already ensured that lots of smartphone components are already being built in India that Indian vendors can take advantage of. Besides Indian companies are different beasts today.

Look at india motorcycle manufacturers not only they protected indian market from chinese onslaught but also leveraged base in India to drive out chinese motorcycles from Africa.

Mobile manufacturers can do the same .

One more thing . This move might encourage chinese brands indian high rankers to establish completely independent entity to make in India.
