India to push back against 'agenda-driven' global ranking firms, Modi adviser says

Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of Modi's Economic Advisory Council, said India has begun to raise this issue at global forums. He said the indices were being compiled by a "tiny group of think-tanks in the North Atlantic," sponsored by three or four funding agencies that are "driving a real-world agenda."

"It is not just narrative building in some diffused way. This has clear direct impact on trade, investment and other activities," Sanyal said.

"There are other developing countries who are also concerned about this because effectively this is a form of neo-colonialism," he said, adding that concerned ministries have been asked to establish benchmarks and engage continuously with ratings agencies.

On a more serious note, the nice story they have written about UPSC and other competitive exams is pretty much the norm across all Asian nations; I am sure the authors know how brutally competitive exams tend to be in cheeniland or Korea. The GoI should keep doing their bit and let the economy take care of the rest; maintaining a consistent 7% growth in this environment would be quite an achievement. My only concern is that the poorerst in the income pyramid is probably feeling a lot of heat (going by FMCG sales, entry level two wheeler sales etc) and while there are indications that the rural economy is probably recovering something more needs to be done (I have written about it earlier) and since 2024 is an election year the GoI is probably waiting to time those responses (something on the lines of PM kisan needhi, higher MGNREGA allocation, reintroduction of subsidies in LPG etc; if needed). The rest, the GoI should continue with their policies and not tinker too much. We are attracting some portion of supply chains from cheenis and additionally some trickle down impact of NDA 2's policies are bound to make some controbution towards growth post maybe 2024 or 2025 (global economy will not remain in bad shape for eternity). It will be some achievemnt if we can get away with ~7% ish avg growth till then.
