Sri Lanka's population is ~2.2 crores. Being bang on one of the busiest sea lanes has helped little to alleviate its status from a top sex tourism destination particularly paedos from the subcontinent and elsewhere. What Sri Lanka government does or what happens to Sri Lanka in future is a trivial issue.
The fact remains that depite Sri Lankas recent economic problems the standard of living of an
average SriLankan is far better than an average Indian.Sri Lanka is better than India in almost
all socioeconomic parameters and this is what matters to me,not how much debt their government has piled up and how indebted they are to the Chinese loansharks.
The 'upto the mark' means that the next time when i travel to villages across the country i get to see people getting water from piped connection and not defecating and bathing near ponds.
They have access to clean water and not arsenic and heavy metal filled filthy ground water.
The next time i visit a village,i don't come across children dropping out of school before completing their matriculation and girls getting married in their early teens.
In Short India's economic performance should be equally matched by it's social performance which sadly has not been the case so far.
It is well documented that india's economic growth over the past 30 years indeed has reduced poverty,
but those poor mostly don't transcend to middle class but to vulnerable low income group.
Population wise, Sri Lanka can be comparable to 2-3 Indian states. The state of Haryana, Punjab and Chattisgarh, all are land locked and quite distant from a major sea port.

Nominal GDP of land locked Haryana, Punjab and Chattisgarh.
Chattisgarh is largely untapped because a good part of the state is under Naxal influence.
Let Sri Lanka do better than Haryana and Punjab first, then we go about comparing it to India as a whole, kapiche?
