TFR is rapidly falling in many emerging economies all across the globe; in many cases even faster than us. Can't be possible that a nation of 1.3 billion+ is the only exception :)
I don't think it is falling man. Maybe among the upper middle class. But just travel around the country in rural and urban poor areas; you will see families that can't even afford 1 kid have 5-6 of them. I had a maid who had 7 daughters and 1 son. Her elder daughter got married at 19 and the cycle continues.

On top of that, you also see ola walas having multiple wives and armies of children because their god ordered them to and you have the perfect recipe for economic and natural resources disaster.

It is though see the fertility rates of india its near replacement levels the only problematic states are up and bihar which because they are poor still have a high fertility rate check the official data and don't rely on anecdotal evidence

Old maids' tales. No way that surveys done over decades, across the length and breadth of the country are all wrong. The Indian census bureau is actually really well respected; its expertise sought by the likes of the UN.

From what I have seen, very few people have more than two kids now. It's prohibitively expensive to have more. You have more than two, you and your next generation fall behind the rest. Most people see that playing out directly in their lives. Moreover, even the most deprived aspire to get their daughters educated, which automatically pushes up the age at which they get married. There are even many people who choose to remain single for life now, something that would have been considered unthinkable even two decades back.

How can pakistan be ranked above india in this so called “hunger index“ infant mortality rate in Pakistan is 55.7 deaths per 1000 live Births , Maternal Mortality rate is 186 deaths per 100,000 live births and average life expectancy is just 67.27 years

If our people, especially the worker class keep breeding like rabbits how will we ever satisfy their essential needs?

This is a population problem; most countries are pressing the panic button when they reach 50+ million. Here, we have 20 million people added every year. This doesn't even consider the millions of urban poor living off in shanty towns, tents on footpaths of metro cities, unorganized slums, etc.

Government needs to get some sort of vasectomy/tubectomy incentive program for these people after 2 children. Basically make it financially rewarding to have less kids for folks like; rickshaw drivers, cleaners, street vendors, pullers, manual labourers, scavengers, homeless, etc.

The TFR figures floated in official sources is absolute crap. Do you really think that India's TFR has fallen? It may have fallen among the top 5% population class where people want more prosperous life with less stress of kids. The next 20% have 2-3 kids, which is still OK, but the next 75% have armies at home.

Without a carrot-and-stick approach, we are looking at a disaster in 10 years.
This hunger index is a crap check the infant and maternal mortality rate of Pakistan check the average life expectancy if Pakistan is better fed it should have higher average life expectancy and lower infant and maternal mortality rates which is not the case

The overall fertility rate of india was 2.2 births per woman in 2019-20 which in 2021 might have fallen below replacement level of 2.1 Pakistan on the other hand has very high fertility rate of 3.45 births per woman

India should be more concerned about crucial parameters of human development like Infant /maternal mortality rate and average life expectancy this hunger index , happiness index , coolness index , hotness index , beauty index , Gross Domestic Happiness , are BS
The Day India achieves Average life expectancy and Infant and Maternal Mortality rate comparable to Norway , Singapore or Japan india will be a superpower no country can be strong without healthy population

Global poverty clock? Not accurate at all. Especially since covid they are using 'extrapolations' and 'estimates' because they do not have any data. Check their website carefully; they have admitted it.

And last but not the least; do not trust random reports published by NGOs/self proclaimed economic forums.

Are there any reports that say how many people are in poverty in this country in absolute numbers?

Check surveys published by the GOI (NFHS, CNNS etc). Some data is available in the WB website as well.

India was all set to become free of extreme poverty by 2023 end and covid might not significantly delay it if GDP projections are to be trusted.

Just to add a little nuance to your post.

-Extreme poverty is not going anywhere soon, even US has extreme poverty. a small percentage will continue to remain.
-GDP growth and reduction in extreme poverty are not directly related. if a state govt is not implementing poverty reduction programmes, that state will continue to have extreme poverty population inspite of GDP growth at national level.

Extreme poverty in us is very different from extreme poverty in india though i am not talking about relative poverty wrt to the country but globally

Ya'll Nibbiars I don't remember the last time I uttered "Full kar do" at the petrol pump!

The petrol pump staff told me yesterday that all usual customers are filling-up the tanks with max 1,500 to 2,000 rupees at the most.

This is the 14th time that petrol price has been hiked in two weeks while diesel rates have gone up 17 times in three weeks.

In Delhi, petrol now costs 105.14 rupees per litre while the price of diesel was raised by the same amount to 93.87 rupees per litre. In Mumbai, petrol prices were raised by 0.34 paise to 111.09 rupees per litre while diesel by 0.37 paise to 101.78 rupees per litre.

I have seen life of tribals in dense jungle of central India . They live in nature .. Eat their variety of indegenus rice rich in nutriet , hunt animals , eat wild fruits .. They get all of this for free .. But as per global standard they live in extreme poverty .. They are not part of the market .
Village people in india eat sufficient amount of vegitables grown in their backward , Catch fish from the local ponds , river .. They dnt need money to buy that ... They are outside market .. They dnt need to feed their children who get free meal in school and dnt need to pay for medicine or medical expense in govt hospitals ..
So this extreme poverty thing dnt strictly apply in many cases .

I am not saying things need nt improve . But the picture that is presented which depicts people dying on road in hunger and poverty is not true .
