Indian diplomat attacked in Chinese court

Press Trust of India

Beijing: An Indian diplomat was injured and hospitalised following an assault by a large group of Chinese traders in a court, as he tried to secure the release of two Indians who were held hostage by locals, demanding payment of their dues in the eastern business hub of Yiwu.

S Balachandran, a diplomat at the Indian Consulate in Shanghai was rushed to hospital when he fainted after being "manhandled" by the crowd that tried to snatch two kidnapped Indians who clung to him.

The incident happened when he was leaving the court after prolonged negotiations on the night of December 31.

The two Indians had been held hostage by the local traders for two weeks for non-payment of dues by their company, whose owner had allegedly fled the country.

Riva Ganguly Das, the Consul General of the Shanghai Consulate of India told PTI in Beijing that Balachandran, working as Consul at the Consulate fainted when he was "manhandled", while attempting to get the release of Deepak Raheja and Shyamsunder Agrawal.

Balachandran, 46, tried to negotiate for their release for over five hours at a court in Yiwu, a big trading centre for a host of commodities.
He was assaulted when the two Indians, being held captive for over fortnight clung on to him to leave the surcharged place. The incident took place in the court and in the presence of police and the judge.

A high drama ensued as the crowd prevented the two from going along with him demanding that they pay millions of Yuan owed to them for commodities purchased from them.

Many. There was an advisory from Indian Foreign Office to the traders of India about the duping of the traders by the Chinese.

Companies duping here is not the big issue, its the assaut on an Indian Diplomat.

If the Govt has any shame left, it should do what has to be done even if it is dangerous for the relations between the 2 countries.

If there is a business issue then it has to be tackled as per the law and not letting the mobs decide their own street laws.
.
Chinese govt needs to take STERN actions for this assault.Assaulting any foreign diplomat is against the rules and if Chinese govt does not take actions then some similar actions must be taken by Indian govt as per the law.

I had an impression that Chinese general population is mature, calm and composed as compared to the rest.....as I read more and more about Chinese and south-china sea; I get the impression that Chinese are simply put - - short-tempered violent people with streaks of dementia and for money they can go upto any level.

Indian diplomat attacked in court by Chinese traders

Riva Ganguly Das, the Consul General of the Shanghai Consulate of India told PTI here that Balachandran, working as Consul at the Consulate fainted when he was "manhandled", while attempting to get the release of Deepak Raheja and Shyamsunder Agrawal.

They later pounced on them and snatched the two from Balachandran, who in the process suffered injuries especially to his knee. A diabetes patient, Balanchandran fainted after the assault.

Balachandran was rushed to the local hospital in an ambulance in a semi-conscious state by local officials and some Indian traders based in Yiwu.

Local officials reportedly apologised to Balachandran after the incident.

Though the court said Deepak and Shayamsundar were free to go, they remained in police custody fearing attack by the crowd. They too suffered injuries in the incident.

Balachandran was admitted to a hospital in Shanghai yesterday where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries.

His condition was better and he is currently undergoing various tests, Das said.

The two Indians are lodged at a police station and the Consulate has appointed a lawyer to secure their release.

The two were held as captive after the owner of their company, Euro Global Trading, fled without paying the dues of local suppliers. The owner was stated to be a Yemeni or a Pakistani national.

The two Indians hailing from Mumbai say they were employees of the company but the local Chinese suppliers assert they will be released only after they pay the dues.

Their families were in touch with the Indian Consulate officials to obtain their release.

Over 100 Indian traders stay in Yiwu which is the centre of commodities trading.

Last year, Indian merchants bought over USD 15 billion worth of goods from the market.

Indians say such incidents are common in Yiwu as local suppliers target the traders whenever payments are not made.

Violent show by traders who has millions of yuan in due .

Not a common sight even here.

But the police acting as idle ones, is quite strange but not surprising.

I guess the city of yivu, must be a traditional one.... not trader/outsider friendly like others.

Government is saying that he wasn't attacked. The person is diabetic, and he was denied access to the medicines while the court proceedings were going on. He was not allowed to leave the courtroom and he collapsed.

Actually, if the Chinese govt does not take action, then it maybe time for the Chinese Ambassador to be a 'victim' of road rage that is common in Delhi.

While the Indian Consul General may have been a diabetic, the Chinese Ambassador suffers from a high degree of anger and maybe a BP patient! Therefore, he is an ideal chap who can be trashed because of his rage when he is confronted with an accident!

India summons Chinese envoy over ill treatment of diplomat

India's foreign ministry complained to Beijing at a high level on Monday, saying a diplomat was denied medicine to control severe diabetes and collapsed while offering consular assistance to two Indian citizens on trial in China's Yiwu city.
But the source denied Indian media reports that the diplomat had been attacked by an angry crowd for defending the two businessmen on trial.
