A combined Army and Assam Rifles unit ambushed and killed three militants of the underground People's Liberation Army (PLA) in Myanmar on Saturday night. Army sources in Manipur said the three PLA militants were killed 'in a daring cross border action'. "Our boys went 2.8 km into Myanmar and did this act in broad daylight. We even brought two bodies to our own side," Army sources told India Today.
The operation was carried out by troops of 11th battalion of the Assam Rifles and the 6 Dogra regiment. Eighteen soldiers from the Dogra unit were ambushed by suspected NSCN(K) guerillas in Chandel district on June 4. Indian Army special forces carried out a retaliatory raid on rebel camps in Myanmar on June 8 in which they killed an unknown number of militants.
"The September 5 action was along the border. We did not go across," an Army spokesperson in Delhi clarified. The combined units were on an area domination patrol in Manipur's Chandel district which shares a border with Myanmar when they ran into the PLA militants. The firefight lasted an hour in which five militants were killed including a self-styled Major, a self-styled Captain and a self-styled Lieutenant. Two bodies were taken away by the PLA cadres who retreated after the encounter. The army unit brought back bodies of two slain militants and handed them to the Moreh police station. The Meitei-dominated PLA was founded in 1978 and is fighting for an independent Manipur.
