Sunjuwan attack: Rifleman’s wife shot in back, airlifted, delivers baby

Rifleman Nazir Ahmed and his pregnant wife were injured in the firing by the terrorists and were shifted to the Military Hospital at Satwari.


A pregnant lady, who was injured in the attack by heavily armed militants on the family quarters of the Sunjuwan military station in Jammu on Saturday, delivered a baby girl on Sunday.

Rifleman Nazir Ahmed Khan and his 28-week pregnant wife, Shahzada Khan, 24, were injured in firing by the militants and were shifted to the military hospital in the cantonment area, an army official said. The woman received gunshot injuries in her lower back. She was airlifted to the military hospital along with her husband. Their premature baby, weighing 2.5kg, was said to be in good health.

“Army doctors worked through the night to save the lives of the severely injured pregnant lady with gunshot wounds and through a Caesarean section, delivered a baby girl. Both the mother and the baby are stable,” defence spokesman Lt Col Devender Anand said.

“The doctors had a complicated case on their hands. The lady was hit with a bullet on her hip and was critical. At the same time, the pulse of the child was going down. The doctors had to cure the gunshot wounds and at the same time save the child,” he added. With time fast running out, they performed a Caesarean section, he added.

The lady was in the family quarters where the terrorists struck around 4.50am on Saturday.

Anything less than air or missile strikes to take out actual terror camps will be of little value. Surgical strikes are good for limited PR, but little more and even if they aren't disclosed, they happen at a smaller scale regularly.

Having said that, I expect little. Due to whatever constraints, the current government and military establishment do not seem in favor of such escalation. So lets accept this will keep happening and move on. When terrorists enjoy local support, stopping such attacks is very hard, intelligence inputs notwithstanding.

Pakis are fine with the status quo. They keep bleeding us with cheap terrorist fodder and also maintain control over their country and its finances. Besides, I doubt their Chini masters who are increasingly taking over their territory will allow them to initiate such a stupid move. Besides, they hardly have resources for any serious escalation.

They have worked out India's threshold for response and will keep the burner below that level. Our establishment too seems fine with that arrangement. So this will continue. We might just get some blips now and then, maybe another surgical strike but nothing more.

Even minor strategic response such as utilization of more water from IWT will take a few years and by then there might be another dispensation at center which would not be inclined to utilize this option. Frankly, I am not sure if even Modi will do much in this regard.

War is not child's play, Even after parliament attack vajpayee only moved troops, never initiated war.

But as citizens our ask should be for more institutional strength, not becoming a victim of saviour complex.

Policy should be driven by govt, institutions should enforce the policy. Expecting modi to react on day-to-day workings of IA is not the answer.

Internal rivalry's are common in army now days

Don't want say this but promotion to preferable location is also conducted

Rate are fix for such location. such situations are plagued our police departments but now in to military too

Defence commissions etc are part of the job nowdays

Many general now days show open political bias and became peacenicks

Many retired soldiers an family are part of leftist Liberal gangs
