L&T needs to concentrate on commercial ship production. Companies which had invested in shipyards anticipating defence orders have folded up. Not one but two. The govt and DPSU are not going to give you significant orders.

Go for commercial production, bring the level of competitiveness Korea brings and slowly commerical orders will come. Defence orders should only be an add on bonus.

The ship, with enhanced indigenization of critical machinery, has bettered various contractual parameters like speed, fuel efficiency, low turning circle etc. during sea trials.

NSA Doval to commission Indian Coast Guard's ship Sajag today


New Delhi [India], May 29 (ANI): The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Ship 'Sajag' is all set to be commissioned by National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval on Saturday.
In a tweet, the ICG said that Sajag, the third in a series of five offshore patrol vessels, has been indegenously designed in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Make in India vision.
"#ICG ship 'Sajag', 3rd in series of five Offshore Patrol Vessel indigenously designed & built by M/s GSL #Goa in lines with Hon'ble PM's vision @makeinindia, a fine example of #AtmanirbharBharat, will be commissioned today by Shri Ajit Doval, KC, National Security Advisor," the ICG tweeted. Indian Coast Guard RFI for New Generation Fast Patrol Vessel is out.

Length 60-65 MTR ( up from 46-50 MTR)
Displacement approx 700T ( up from 300T)

Total number :18

Rough estimate ( from specifications in RFI) is that it might be similar or little larger to Sa'ar 62 OPV.

Coast Guard adds teeth to its aviation arm by inducting ALH Mk-III

In line with Atmanirbhar Bharat vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar today inducted Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Mk-III in Indian Coast Guard (ICG). The state-of-the-art helicopters are indigenously designed and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bengaluru.


Dr Ajay Kumar in his address praised the perseverance of the ICG and HAL by inducting these helicopters in testing times and progressing our Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Make in India’. He also brought out the importance of having these advanced helicopters for ICG to operate them across the spectrum of Coast Guard operations. The ceremony was carried out in Bengaluru through digital means from New Delhi, keeping COVID-19 protocol at the fore and promoting ‘Digital India’ vision of the Government.


The ALH Mk-III marine version has been designed and developed with in-house customisation of 19 additional equipment by HAL to meet ICG requirements. The HAL will supply 16 ALH Mk-III to the ICG by mid next year. The helicopters are capable of undertaking embarked operations from ships which will enhance Coast Guard capabilities towards sea-air co-ordinated search, interdiction capabilities, coastal security, search and rescue operations, medical evacuation, humanitarian missions, pollution response missions, etc.


While appreciating ICG for the recently conducted successful operations of drugs & arms seizure and saving lives during cyclones Tauktae & YAAS, Defence Secretary said the capacity and capability augmentation of the service needs to be materialised in a time bound manner considering the onerous responsibilities bestowed on ICG by the Government.


On induction, the 16 ALH Mk-III will be positioned at four Coast Guard squadrons at Bhubaneshwar, Porbandar, Kochi and Chennai. The shared maritime boundaries with littoral states are highly susceptible to illegal activities and the regions are prone to frequent cyclones. These squadrons with embarked operations will ensure seamless surveillance and provide assistance to fishermen in distress at sea.


Director General Coast Guard Shri K Natarajan while acknowledging the efforts of Tatrakshaks for recent concurrent successful operations said that the ICG is as prepared as ever to discharge its duties and induction of ALH Mk-III will usher a new paradigm shift in our capability to undertake ship borne operations and enhance surveillance prowess with extended reach. He also brought out that these helicopters will be deployed in a coordinated matrix alongwith ships and aircraft to strengthen the service capabilities in Area of Responsibility and beyond.


Chairman and Managing Director of HAL Shri R Madhavan and other senior officials of Ministry of Defence were among those who attended the event.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh to commission indigenously built Indian Coast Guard Ship Vigraha on Saturday

Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Ship Vigraha, seventh in the series of Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), will be commissioned by Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh in Chennai on August 28, 2021. The ship will be based in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh and operate on the eastern seaboard under the Operational and Administrative Control of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (East).

The 98-meter OPV, with a complement of 11 officers and 110 sailors, has been designed and built indigenously by Larsen & Toubro Ship Building Limited. It is fitted with advanced technology radars, navigation & communication equipment, sensors and machinery capable of operating in tropical sea conditions. The vessel is armed with a 40/60 Bofors gun and fitted with two 12.7 mm Stabilised Remote Control Gun with fire control system. The ship is also equipped with integrated bridge system, integrated platform management system, automated power management system and high-power external fire-fighting system.





The ship is also designed to carry one twin-engine Helicopter and four high speed boats for boarding operation, search & rescue, law enforcement and maritime patrol. The ship is also capable of carrying pollution response equipment to contain oil spill at sea. The ship displaces approximately 2,200 tons and is propelled by two 9100 KW diesel engines to attain a maximum speed of 26 nautical miles per hour with endurance of 5000 nm at economical speed.

The ship, on joining the Coast Guard Eastern fleet, will be deployed extensively for EEZ surveillance and other duties as enshrined in the Coast Guard Charter to safeguard the country’s maritime interests. The ICG, with this ship joining the fleet, will have 157 ships and 66 aircraft in its inventory.





The commissioning ceremony will also be attended by Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Shri M K Stalin, Chief of Army Staff General M M Naravane, Director General Indian Coast Guard Shri K Natarajan and other senior dignitaries of the central & state governments.

Indian Coast Guard will soon enter into a lean phase as far as inductions of ships/vessels are concerned.
No new Intercepter craft are being built ( L&T has supplied all 54 and Bharati & RNaval are sick)
Similary new generation IPV are still in RFI stage.
OPV too in the same situation ( L&T has supplied all 7 and 2 from GOA shipyard are pending). No repeat order or new RFI has been floated.
Only two more Pollution Control Vessels have been awarded to Goa Shipyard.

Unless new shipsets are ordered, ICG will hit hard brake as far as inductions are concerned.

Gentlemen, don't you think that the ICG should completely stop inducting helicopters and focus on looking at inducting RUSTOM-2s or other MALE drones? Drones have greater endurance, cheaper costs, and can cover much more detail than expensive helicopter flights. This would reduce the overall operating cost of the ICG which can optimize these funds for more surface vessels & logistics.

Gentlemen, don't you think that the ICG should completely stop inducting helicopters and focus on looking at inducting RUSTOM-2s or other MALE drones? Drones have greater endurance, cheaper costs, and can cover much more detail than expensive helicopter flights. This would reduce the overall operating cost of the ICG which can optimize these funds for more surface vessels & logistics.
I think you under appreciate the role of the CG. They are a maritime law enforcement arm. Helos are not for ISR but S&R

Or pursue business opportunity worldwide. There are many tenders that are there from Peru to Oman to Indonesia to Mauritius. As public sector companies, they are free to pursue contracts overseas. It's an effort but very much worth it. If they can't do it, these companies can hire private sector specialists who can generate leads and bring businesses.
