Indian Coast Guard to re-base ICGS Rajkamal, six interceptor boats

CHENNAI: Coast Guard ship Rajkamal and six interceptor boats will be re-based in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from here as part of steps towards enhancing security of new Coast Guard stations. ICGS Rajkamal, six interceptor boats C-407, C-412, C-414, C-416, C-417 and C-428, the Commanding officers and crew, were given a traditional farewell today ahead of relocation to Andaman and Nicobar Islands as part of Coast Guard headquarters re-basing plans. "The re-basing plan is aimed towards enhancing the Coastal Security of the new Coast Guard stations for effective optimisation of coast guard assets towards safeguarding the maritime border of the nation", an official release said. Newly commissioned ICGS Arnvesh has already joined the Eastern fleet as part of the plans, it said. Coast Guard Advance Offshore Patrol Vessel 'Sagar' would escort the six interceptor boats to Port of Blair for a "safe passage", the release said.

Watch Indian Coast Guard Training - Part I [Unseen Video]

The Indian Coast Guard is a multi-mission organization, conducting round-the-year real-life operations at sea. Despite being relatively small, it has a wide range of task capabilities for both surface and air operations.

I Just saw this in the recently uploaded video on DRDO's Site. Since C295 is also chosen for the Avro replacement, they might have decided to go ahead with it to increased commonality of logistics between Navy, CG and Air force and increased indian order means less unit per price. Just my two cents

As TASL going to manufacture C295, how much chance are there for acquisition of C-295 Persuader by ICG.

Am I right if I say current govt hasn't cleared or announced any new project for ICG.
One is for building OPVs by L&T, that can be in exchange of 30 Timblo class FPBs, I know 1 OPV is bigger than 30 FPBs.
Is ICG in A&N under tri-service ANC command?
Yes.

Comparing FPBs to OPVs is pointless. It is like comparing a car to a bus - both have their own individual roles. FPBs are meant to respond quickly to local situations, while OPVs are for long range, planned patrols.

Yes, I know if navy have both of them then obviously OPVs are more powerful as navy may not have requirement for such small boats but ICG needs many small boats.
There my point was OPV is bigger than FPBs, not OPV is more powerful than 30 FPBs. My point was 1 OPV may cost more than 30 FPBs, as govt cleared 7 L&T class OPVs but canceled 30 Timblo class FPBs as Timblo shipyard was unable to make such ship now.
I wanted govt should have cleared 2-3 more projects of IFV or small crafts for coast guard.

We know we have threat & that is increasing day by, you remember Pak terror boat incident.

Thanks for the information, I was not aware about the timblo cancellation. This class of vessel is built by so many builders in India, that it will not be difficult for MoD to place a new order.

The OPV order is significant as it is a first to a pvt builder by ICG. I have a bias towards L&T - I think they will do a fantastic job. INs order of OPVs with Pipavav has gone into a limbo sadly.

ICG had to cancel order as delivery date was passed & there was not sign of any work at shipyard, The shipyard finally submitted its inability to progress ahead with the project due to incorrect inputs from their original designer resulting non fitting of equipment as per provision of contract during the meeting held at MoD on 12 March 2013. 7 tonnes boats are already operational built by Timblo these was to be 15 tonnes boats. 15x30=450 tonnes way small than 2200 tonnes OPV.
Timblo-class patrol crafts
I mentioned that govt haven't ordered anything except OPVs & cancelled order for FPBs but threat is increasing.

Yes, I think L&T will deliver all OPVs before deadline as they are doing with fast interceptor crafts.
I heard L&T is running in bid to supply FIC to Indonesia.

Sagar has eyes that can see 15 nautical miles into the sea

KOLKATA: In the operations room of the Coast Guard regional headquarters in Rajarhat, an officer scans the monitor in front. There are a series of dots around a sattellite image of India. He zooms in and the West Bengal coastline comes into focus. The dots also become well defined. He clicks on one and all details of the ship appear on the monitor, including its name, course and cargo.

The radar station on Sagar Island, the only of its kind in West Bengal, has become operational and authorities believe that this will help secure the long coastline of the state.

"Apart from the one on Sagar, we also have two radar stations in Odisha to monitor the 740 km long coastline of the two states. These are part of 46 coastal radar surveillance stations that have been set up along India's coastline. Six of these are in the Lakshadweep Islands and four in the Andamans. These radar stations have the most advanced equipment in the world and can monitor movement of ships up to 15 nautical miles into the sea. There are cameras that can operate during the night as well as in bad weather. We can also pick up movement of people on the decks of the ships by adjusting the cameras," said K R Nautiyal, IG and commander, Coast Guard, North East Region.

What makes this radar unique is its versatility. Officers at operations rooms in Kolkata and Delhi can take over control of the cameras and zoom on to the activities on the deck of the vessel. If the vessel is over 300 tonnes, it must have Automatic Identification System (AIS) and all details and course are available to the Coast Guard at the click of a mouse. Any diversion in course without justifiable cause is enough to declare it a 'suspect' vessel. Smaller vessels can be monitored on a case to case basis. The need for this chain of surveillance radars was felt after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. It took another 7-8 years for all the 46 radar stations in the first phase to be installed.

According to Nautiyal, the Coast Guard is now planning to tie up with radars of major ports like Kolkata, Haldia and Paradip. A link-up is also on the lines with advanced radars of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), including the one at the Interim Test Range in Chandipur. The Rajarhat headquarters is a Regional Operating Centre (ROC) to which feeds are sent by the Remote Operating Stations (ROS) at Haldia and Paradip. The Coast Guard headquarters in Delhi also receives live feeds.

"In Phase-II, we shall have 38 more radar stations. One of these will be at Frasersgunj. We will also have eight mobile radar platforms that will be deployed if more surveillance is required in a particular area or one of the static terminals develops a glitch. Phase-II should be completed by 2019. We are also holding regular coastal exercises with other security agencies, both state and central. The last such exercise concluded recently along the West bengal coast. All stakeholders have come a long away since this practice started. Today, their abilities to tackle a crisis has improved manifold. Our idea is to develop a dynamic security system that will keep up with the changing security scenario globally," Nautiyal added.

GSL set to build five offshore vessels for Coast Guard

PANAJI: Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has received the cabinet committee on security (CCS) sanction to build five off-shore patrol vessels for the Indian Coast Guard a cost of over 2000 crore. The contract is expected to be signed within the next 10 days.

"These ships will be made in a reduced build period of about three years each. Construction will start immediately.

With this order, and some other orders expected to be signed in another three months, the order book position will double to over 4500 crore. This is the highest order book GSL has attained in last five years," chairman and managing director Shekhar Mital said.

The shipyard has also been picked to manufacture mine counter measure vessels for a cost of 32,000 crore. The contract for the order of 12 minesweepers is expected to be signed in mid-2017, Mital said.

GSL already has a contract to build six Coast Guard offshore patrol vessels which it is executing and delivering well ahead of schedule.

TOI was the first to report, in 2015, that the Indian Coast Guard had expressed its desire to place an order for an additional five off-shore patrol vessels.

While launching the second Coast Guard ship manufactured by GSL, Indian Coast Guard additional director general Rajendra Singh had said that they were impressed with the quality of vessels delivered by GSL.

The Vasco-based defence public sector unit has emerged as the highest spender of capital expenditure and has shown over 40% growth in revenues in two years, with manifold jump in operational profits, Mital said.

The shipyard has also decided to manufacture hovercrafts locally and expand its range of simulators

the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is planning to induct 80 more vessels of various sizes in the coming years, revealed sources.
According to official sources, the Navy currently has 140 ships of various sizes and the ICG has 120 vessels that cater to various needs.
After the 26/11 attacks on the city, the Navy is keeping a close eye on coastal security to prevent any trespassing. In the last one year, in a bid to stop intrusion into Indian waters, fishing boats all across the coastal states were given a colour code. Fishermen were also brought into the loop and asked to raise an alarm if they noticed anything unusual, said a top officer from ICG.
“Last time in September, a pre-arrival notification system was established in Gurugram. This system can locate all the arriving boats, and gives a notification, so now every ship has to report to us three days prior to their arrival. If our system detects no arrival data of the ship appearing in the radar, then local naval and ICG ships get an alert to take further action,” explained a top defence official from Delhi.
According to a top Navy official, having learnt from the 26/11 attacks, the Navy and ICG are focusing on sharing inputs with other agencies and establishing good coordination between the two agencies.
