CSL Delivers Six FPVs to
Coast Guard

KOCHI: Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) on Friday delivered the sixth in the series of 20 Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) being built for the Indian Coast Guard. The protocol of delivery and acceptance was signed by Vinayakumar P, director (technical), on behalf of CSL and commanding officer (designate) of the vessel Cmdt (JG) Umed Singh of the Indian Coast Guard. Cmdt K Subramaniam, C&MD, CSL, DIG Vivek Vajpayee, principal director (Materials), Indian Coast Guard and DIG T P Sadanandan, CGRPS (Kochi), Capt RS Sundar, director (operations), CSL, Paul Ranjan, director (finance), CSL, were present on the occasion. The vessel is named 'CGS AGRIM' and will be operated by the Coast Guard station in Mumbai. Cochin Shipyard had signed the contract for the construction of the 20 FPVs for the Coast Guard. Like its sister ships, 'AGRIM' is a FPV capable of speed upto 33 knots and will be very effective in supporting the Coast Guard in its anti-smuggling, anti-piracy operations, fisheries protection and monitoring. Since speed of the vessel is crucial in coastal security operations, the superstructure of these ships is made of aluminium. A considerable amount of innovation in welding and fabrication techniques were undertaken by CSL to achieve a very high-quality product. The ship is propelled by water jets powered by three main engines, each of 2720 KW capacity and built to the dual classification requirements of ABS and IRS. Apart from the 20 FPVs for the Coast Guard, the CSL is also constructing the most prestigious warship of the country, the Indigenous Aircraft Carrier, one Offshore Support Vessel for Norwegian owner and one Buoy Tender Vessel for Directorate of Light Houses and Light Ships.

Mumbai: A subordinate officer of the Indian coast guard, Uttam Adhikari Mahavir Singh has been commended by the International Maritime Organistaion for display of exceptional bravery at sea while assisting in the fire fighting operations onboard merchant vessel MOL Comfort, thus avoiding a pollution incident. Indian Coast Guard helicopter rescues stranded fire brigade personnel

Mumbai: An Indian Coast Guard helicopter was pressed into service to rescue stranded fire brigade personnel from top of the high rise building, Lotus Business Park, Andheri West, under fire. At about 1335 hrs on 18 July 2014, information was received by Coast Guard Regional Headquarters, Worli from BMC Disaster Management Cell regarding 10 – 15 firemen trapped in the high rise building. Coast guard helicopter from 842 Squadron (Coast Guard) took off at 02:18 PM in severe weather conditions. Arriving at the scene at 02:28 PM, the helicopter carried out thorough assessment of the situation. The extreme conditions of strong wind, rain coupled with fire/ smoke in vicinity made the rescue extremely difficult and dangerous. Braving all conditions, coast guard pilots started winching the trapped personnel. Manik Ogale, Fire Fighter, of Andheri Fire Station, was safely rescued and dropped to a nearby ground. The Coast Guard helicopter again returned for monitoring/rescue. With the fire having been brought under control and safe evacuation of the remaining personnel, Coast Guard helicopter returned to Naval Air Station. Indian Navy too had pressed a Seaking C helicopter into service which was launched at around 2:30 PM. The helicopter was not used as the fire was controlled by the fire fighters.
