Coast Guard commissions Hovercraft H-193 in Haldia
Hovercraft H-193, an air-cushioned vehicle, was commissioned in Haldia Thursday for use of the Coast Guard in maintaining close surveillance off the West Bengal coast, and assisting fishermen in distress.

The vehicle was commissioned by Coast Guard's regional commander (North East) and Inspector General K.C. Pande in a simple ceremony in the presence of senior officers.

The induction of Hovercraft H-193 would add teeth to the Coast Guard operations in West Bengal, a defence ministry press release said.

The 21 metre long Hovercraft, designed and built by M/s Griffon Hoverworks Limited (GHL) of Britain, has a displacement of 31 tonnes and is capable of achieving speeds in excess of 45 knots an hour.

The craft is ideally suited for undertaking shallow water operations and would further enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard.

"The craft will be deployed for close coast surveillance of the West Bengal coast, search and rescue and rendering assistance to fishermen in distress," said the release.

Hovercraft H-193, commanded by Commandant Sailesh Gupta, has a crew of two officers and 12 enrolled personnel. It would be based in Haldia under the administrative and operational control of the commander, Coast Guard Region (North East).

Coast Guard inches its way towards setting up Air Enclave ( Mangalore)
MANGALORE: Indian Coast Guard is inching ever so slowly towards its stated goal of setting up an air enclave in this coastal city. Vital to undertaking aerial surveillance of India's vast and sometimes porous coastline especially along the West Coast, the air enclave holds vital strategic importance to national security. Delay on part of the state government in handing over land is holding up setting up the air enclave.

Coast Guard's IG reviews
projects at Goa Shipyard

PANAJI: Inspector General S K Goyal, deputy director general (M&M), Indian Coast Guard, visited Goa Shipyard Limited on Friday to review the progress of the six new generation offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) indigenously designed and being constructed by GSL for the Indian Coast Guard with RAdm (Retd) Shekhar Mital, chairman and managing director, GSL. The Indian Coastguard had inked the contract for the vessels with GSL in May 2012. The new OPVs will be leaps ahead of the vessels currently in use, as they have been designed with a contemporary navigational integrated bridge system with bridge watch navigational call up system, CCTV system for surveillance, and additional features like quick response boats for rescue and anti -piracy as well as a four lane simulator for small arms training. The hull would be the most efficient form designed by GSL and would provide for fuel efficiency, crew comfort and excellent sea keeping qualities, Mital explained. Sources in GSL said that the first OPV is likely to be delivered in August this year, and by 2017, all six would be commissioned by the force. Till date, GSL has built 22 vessels for the Indian Coast Guard , including offshore patrol vessels, fast patrol vessels and advanced offshore patrol vessels ranging from 46m to 105m in length. GSL is the principal designer and builder of offshore patrol vessels for the Indian Coast Guard.
