To make long story short, are we ready to hit a fly in the sky with our missile defence system?

Left unsaid in this latest BMD test by DRDO is the clear demonstration of the low earth orbit (LEO) capabilities of PDV. PDV is actually a predecessor to another exo-atmospheric interceptor currently under development that can neutralize RVs at altitudes of over 300 km. Taken together this means that India has all the elements in place for a direct ascent counter space system that can potentially be used for anti-satellite purposes. This in turn means that India now has a very strong hand in the Space NPT that is currently being quietly negotiated by the world’s nuclear powers.

Hope we don't make same mistake like Nukes , we should't let the deal happens before we test ASAT weapon

Russians have kickass pill box radar, it has size of big building, they can scan very bjg area. So much so that they can track, satellite, missiles and RV IN Indian Ocean, there area of interest in our area ooks like diego garcia.

Russians can track all Pakistani launch sitting in Moscow. We should also build these big ones for China. It looks like VHF and UHF radar.

Here the video from which it was taken.

India likely to test homegrown interceptor missile on Wednesday

BHUBANESWAR: Nearly a month after Pakistan conducted first test of its medium-range
surface-to-surface ballistic missile Ababeel, capable of delivering multiple warheads, India is all set to test
fire an interceptor weapon system, which can effectively destroy incoming enemy missiles at low altitude.

The weapon, dubbed as advanced air defence interceptor, is likely to be launched from Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast on Wednesday in full operational configuration. A part of the country’s
credible ballistic missile defence (BMD) programme, the interceptor is one of the best missiles in its class.

The missile was earlier scheduled for a test in November last year, but the trial was deferred due to some technical reasons. However, on February 11, the Defence Research and Development Organisation
(DRDO) had carried out second test of the Prithvi Defence Vehicle (PDV) interceptor missile, capable of killing incoming missiles at an altitude of more than 100 km at exo-atmospheric zone.

Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister Dr G Satheesh Reddy has arrived at the test facility to oversee the launch preparation. While range preparation for the test is near complete and the missile is integrated with the launcher, final round check-ups of the missile’s sub-systems are on.

“Range integration has been completed and count down already started for the trial. As per of the coordinated exercise, the interceptor will kill a target missile, fired from another location mimicking an enemy missile, mid-air,” said a defence official.

A successful test of the missile bears significance as the weapon system, which has been test fired at least eight times successfully, is likely to be inducted in the armed forces and deployed at strategic locations to protect the country’s cities and important installations from hostile attacks.

Developed by DRDO, the 7.5 metre tall interceptor is a single stage solid rocket propelled guided missile equipped with an inertial navigation system and an electro-mechanical activator under command
by the data up-linked from the ground-based radar. The missile is auto-launched after receiving commands from the radars on the incoming missile.

With an effective anti-ballistic missile system, India is the fourth country in the world to have a BMD programme. Other countries, which have developed a ballistic missile defence system, included
the US, Russia and Israel.

The defence official said though the BMD programme is triggered by growing arsenal of the neighbouring countries, India has been maintaining a no-first-use principle.

A small doubt....
Instead of Barak 8, can't we use our AAD...

Or Barak 8 is much better missile which can take care of highly manovering targets which Ashwin missile can't take on due to its poor manoverability...

Experts please share your thoughts

India Ordered 5 S-400.

Is it Battalion?Division?or Regiment?

what is the number of Radars/Launchers/Missiles in each Battalion/Regiment/Division?

India ordered 5 full scale regimental complects or systems, such a full regiment has 4 battalions with 4 independent fire units. Each fire unit then has 4 launchers and 4 reload vehicles. Thus 64 launchers per regiment with between 256-384 ready to fire missiles depending on missile types + reloads. The deal also will see us getting over 6000 missiles.

China on the other hand ordered 3 semi regiments with 2 battalions each, hence the cost of their deal is nearly 1/3 of what we will pay.

It is also possible that we end up having s-500 under MII eventually once the s-400 is installed and we are happy with it. All 5 regiments should be in place by 2023/24.

Congratulations all, looks like GOI has wake up. Lets see if first stage of BMD is deployed just like Russian BMD.
I thought phase-1 was already completed by 2012, at that time they said the system was ready to be deployed in key cities like Mumbai and Delhi, IMO phase-1 is already deployed. What we are seeing now is phase-2 objectives being tested plus routine tests of existing phase one missiles.

There was a news before that failed test of new vehicle AAD that it will be an advance version with low weight and composite motor and desi seeker.
There is no confirmation of these information except the seeker.

In one of the interview ex drdo chief said first phase done. But formal deployment of bmd shield not done. At the same time i wish to say that it will not make much time to activate it. As all system are mobile.

Still no formal declaration for the same. No special authority or protocal in place. It was told that IAF would be sole authority for it.

PDV is interim measure. Its in between PAD and AD1
