Probability of hiting a target is increases with number of bullets fire on it. I know that its not cheap to operate and you too should know that, many countries are using miniguns.
Understand mr bleh bleh bleh
...As a force multiplier, not as a alternative for LMG (as you suggested).
Why are still using lmg, when we can purchase mini gun from market.
That's like saying why still use assault rifle when wewe cancan purchse the .50 Browning from market.

Assault rifle is for accurate indiscriminate firing. LMG & Minigun is for wild indiscriminate firing. Both LMG & Miniguns will plays the same role.

Why do we need a 7.62mm LMG over 5.56mm? I suppose a major consideration is the ammo weight - why not give more rounds for the same weight to LMG gunner?

I have not seen Negev with mag feed in India, while INSAS LMG has never been seen with belt feed .... confusing!

Laslty what would it take to convert a INSAS LMG to SAW style weapon?

What about other weapon system such as Carl Gustav, UBGL or SVD rifles are they not distributed at section level?

So in essence the present and future composition is as under;
Existing Proposed
7 INSAS SIG/AK 203
1 BREN LMG NEGEV/OFB LMG
2 Sterling carbine CAR

But then its weird having assault rifle AK203 762x39 with LMG/AR 762x51
Carl Gustav is issued at company level
Ubgl would be issued to the grenadier in the section
Ak 203 is for support troops and RR only, NOT for frontline infantry

7.62x51 mm for both Sig 716i and NG7 will work wonders in mountain warfare and against enemies wearing LVL 4 BPJ.

Amid Ladakh Standoff, MoD Hastens Procurement of NEGEV LMG From Israel
NEW DELHI: Boosting the fire power of Indian infantry units amid India-China standoff at LAC, Ministry of Defence (MoD) has requested IWI of Israel to hasten the delivery of a modern state-of-the-art Light Machine Gun (LMG).

The Acquisition Wing of Ministry of Defence in March 2020 had signed the capital acquisition contract with Israel Weapons Industries (IWI) for procurement of 16,479 LMGs at a cost of Rs 880 crore with the approval of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The ministry added that contracted Negev 7.62 x 51 mm LMG is a combat proven weapon and currently used by several countries around the globe. This LMG will greatly enhance the lethality and range of a soldier vis-a-vis the presently used weapon.

Light Machine is the mainstay of a section and assault group of a Unit and it was long overdue as the LMG in use was bought long back. Over a period of time owing to the dynamic nature of warfare, enhanced transparency in battlefield, latest technological advancement and capabilities of adversaries, operational requirements for these Small Arms have undergone a change.

For this particular contract, Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for procurement of LMGs through Fast Track Procedure (FTP) under 'Buy-Global' category was accorded by Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) in February 2018.

Further, a team of Army officers was tasked to scout for the best. The bids for LMG were received from Bulgaria (Arsenal), South Korea (S&T Motiv) and Israel (IWI). Before arriving at the final decision, the teams went to these three countries in May 2019 for trials to pick the best as per its qualitative requirements.

Indian Army gets 6,000 new Israeli Light Machine Guns
The Indian Army received the first consignment of 6,000 Israeli Negev Light Machine Guns out of the 16,000 ordered last year under the Fast Track Procedure.

The Indian Army received the first consignment of 6,000 Israeli Negev Light Machine Guns out of the 16,000 ordered last year under the Fast Track Procedure.

Sources told India Today TV that the guns were delivered earlier this month and are undergoing inspections.

The remaining guns are expected to be delivered by March, sources added.

The Defence Ministry had given approval in March 2019 for thelong-standing demand of a modern state-of-the-art Light Machine Gun (LMG) for the armed forces.

The nod was given by the Defence Acquisition Council headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The Acquisition Wing of the Ministry of Defence had signed the capital acquisition contract with Israel Weapons Industries for procurement of 16,479 LMGs at a cost of Rs 880 crore.

In March 2020, India had signed a contract with Israel Weapons Industries (IWI) to procure 16,479 LMGs under Fast Track Procedure, which are worth Rs. 880 crore.

Indian Army required 40,000 LMGs in addition to assault rifles. The induction of new LMGs will add to the Army’s firepower amid the continuing tussle with China and skirmishes with Pakistan at the LoC, sources have said.

The Negev 7.62X51 mm Light Machine Gun is a combat-proven weapon and currently used by several countries around the globe. The guns will enhance the lethality and range of a soldier in combat situations, according to sources.

Under FTP equipment, procurement can be expedited in face of delays impacting the capacity of forces.

Sources have claimed that the weapon is needed for urgent operational needs and critical operations. It will boost the confidence of the frontline troops and provide much-needed combat power to the Armed Forces, the Defence Ministry had said while approving the procurement earlier.

India gets 6K Negev LMGs from Israel, to add more firepower to forces
India had signed a contract with Israel Weapons Industries (IWI) on March 19, 2020 to procure 16,479 LMGs under Fast Track Procedure.

With the disputed border with China and Pakistan active at the same point of time, the guns will add more firepower to the deployed frontline troops. The Negev 7.62X51 mm Light Machine Gun is a combat proven weapon and currently used by several countries around the globe.

This LMG will greatly enhance the lethality and range of a soldier vis-a-vis the presently used weapon.

Indian Army received first lot of consignment of 6,000 quantities in mid January this year in Mumbai. The guns have been shifted to Jabalpur and is undergoing proper inspection. The rest of the guns is expected to arrive by March end of this year.

Under government's 'Make in India' initiative, rest of the requirement of the Indian Army is being met by Indian industry and currently is at pre-trial stage. "Field Evaluation Trial (FET) scheduled this month," sources said.

On March 19, 2020, Indian Armed Forces' long-standing requirement of a modern state-of-the-art Light Machine Gun (LMG) was fructified with approval of Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The Acquisition Wing of Ministry of Defence then had signed the capital acquisition contract with Israel Weapons Industries for procurement of 16,479 LMGs at a cost of Rs 880 crore.

The Defence Minister had said provisioning of this operationally urgent and very critically needed weapon will boost the confidence of the frontline troops and provide much needed combat power to the Armed Forces.

From next week, troops at LoC and LAC to get new & more lethal Israeli Light Machine Guns
New Delhi: Troops positioned along the Line of Control (LoC) and the Line of Actual Control (LAC) under the Northern Command will get the first tranche of Israeli Light Machine Gun (LMG) Negev NG-7 that has been procured under the fast-track procurement process (FTP).

Sources in the defence and security establishment told ThePrint that while 6,000 of the 7.62X51 mm LMGs, with belt ammunition capability, landed in the country in January, their acceptance trials are being completed and that forward troops will get their hands on them next week.

The new LMGs will replace the 5.56x45mm INSAS LMG, which is a derivative of the INSAS assault rifle.

This is the first tranche of the 16,479 Israeli guns ordered by the Army last March when ceasefire violations by Pakistan at LoC was on the increase and before the new round of tensions at the LAC.

The Army is separately looking at a larger order for the LMGs, which will be through the Make in India route.

While some parts of the Negev are procured from India and the company has a joint venture with the Adani Group’s PLR Systems, the fast-track procurement was inked directly with the Israeli firm.

Next tranche by September or October
Sources said that the next tranche of the 10,000 LMGs will be delivered to India by September or October this year according to the schedule of the contract, which was valued at Rs 880 crore.

The defence ministry had last year said that provisioning of this “operationally urgent and very critically needed weapon” will boost the confidence of the frontline troops and provide much needed combat power to the Armed Forces.

The Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for this fast track procurement was given by the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh-led Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) in February 2018.

As part of the procurement process, an Army delegation had in 2019 visited three countries — Bulgaria, Israel and South Korea — to see the options available. It finally settled on the Negev that is already in use with the country’s special forces.

Capabilities of the NG-7
Because the calibre of NG-7 is bigger than the ones it is replacing, the Negev will have higher lethal firepower.

And because it has the belt ammunition feature, the new LMG will be able to have sustained rate of fire unlike the earlier one that was magazine fed. This meant that magazines had to be changed frequently.

It is also capable of pinpoint, single bullet shooting for enhanced firing accuracy, and has a range of over 800 meters, in line with the requirements of the Army.

In automatic mode, the NG-7 has a rate of fire of over 700 bullets per minute. Weighing 7.5 kg, the LMG can be fired from a wide range of mounts, vehicles, helicopters and naval vessels.
