I hope GoI puts its foot down and says no. No need of Armata.
But GOI won't because Army knows ground realities. I guarantee you , armata or it's indian copy name karna will be coming to replace T 72 down the line ..

As far as the Armata concept is concerned, it is nothing new. Despite what Russians advertise it on their brochure, it is merely an old wine in a new bottle.

US already tried this concept of unmanned turret in the 90s, with a modified M1 hull and a robotic turret, with crew seated in a armour capsule. But the US army rejected this concept in favour of conventional 3 man turret with the M1A1, M1A2 etc. The British also had a similar implemented project on their Challenger 1 hull with a robotic Falcon turret (for the Jordanian Army). But the British army rejected it in favour of Challenger 2.

Falcon turret
The Falcon turret is a modular turret which can be retrofitted on any 3rd generation tank.
As far as Indian Army is concerned, the concept of FRCV came up when the Army decided to go public about its requirement in 2017. After than they haven't made any statement to the media. The concept of FRCV is absurd and vague, as army has not issued any GSQR, but wants global designers to build the tank in India based on their own proposal, and transfer the IPR to Army, and it will be mass produced in India.
Then the Russians have started pitching in the monkey models of their Armata (which their own army is yet to induct in large numbers). The South Koreans are pitching in their K2 MBT. However absence of any concrete requirement stated by army, the project is bound to fail.

FRCV is nothing but backdoor entery for armata.
It will join Indian army just like T 90 and before it T 72 did . It may happen today, tomorrow or a decade down the line but it will happen. K 2 is inferior to armata on every parameter , every western tank currently in service is. it has no chance but when corruption is involved anything is possible , but modi ji has drop offset clause in govt to govt deal in new weapons buying policy due to chotta ambani .
and i have full faith in military leadership that they will make sound decision on merits and not on hera kiri which happened during bhio fiasco, where superior russian system was overlooked intentionally to favour bhio. Let's say to Curry favour to certain desi company and its shareholders  ( Baki aap samajdar ho ).

India begins trials of upgraded T-72 Ajaya Mk2 MBTs

DRDO upgraded T-72 Ajaya Mk2 Main Battle Tank has been sported on a Train wagon heading possibly towards a field range for trials. T-72 Ajaya Mk2 comes equipped with a host of improvements and upgrades which will allow it to operate along with T-90 Main Battle Tanks at the same firepower. T-72 Ajaya Mk2 gets an uprated indigenously-produced high-power multifuel engine V-46-6, based on Russian design, that originally had a 780 hp capacity but now boosts 1000 hp capacity which was modified by CVRDE. T-90 MBT comes equipped with V92S2 engines which also has a 1,000 hp capacity but the Army was keen on uprated Original V-46-6 engines of T-72 due to the higher reliability of the engine instead of going for a swap with V92S2 engines used on T-90s. CVRDE modified peripheral sub-systems of the V-46-6 engines with help from several Indian industries to achieve 1000 hp capacity. T-72 Ajaya Mk2 also features DRDO developed Explosive reactive Armour (ERA) Mk-II for armour protection against shaped-charge warheads and kinetic energy projectiles. According to DRDO, ERA Mk-II has the same configuration and performance as that of the T-90 ERA and it has been demonstrated to the user. T-72 Ajaya Mk2 is also now comes equipped with Israeli TIFCS (Thermal Imager Fire Control Systems ) which now boasts the T-72 tank’s ability to identify targets up to three kilometers at night from earlier 300 meters. Alpha Design Technologies (ADT) is a local Indian partner of the Israeli company Elop-Elbit and the company has been contracted for 300 thermal imager standalone kits of which almost all have been delivered until now. Indian Army is equipped with 1700 T-72 MBTs but only 969 will be upgraded to T-72 Ajaya Mk2 configuration once trials are successfully concluded and the rest are to be phased out in the coming decades gradually.

This might be relevant so posting here.

The sides of the tank's hull will be reinforced with hinged dynamic protection in rigid containers
MOSCOW, September 28. / TASS /. The

T-90M tank in the course of further modernization is proposed to be equipped with an improved complex of active protection "Arena-M", follows from the materials of the 38 Scientific Research Testing Institute of Armored Weapons and Equipment (NII BTVT) of the Russian Ministry of Defense, available to TASS.
Research Institute specialists believe that for the period up to 2025, the modernized T-72B3M, T-80BVM and T-90M will maintain parity with the main battle tanks of foreign countries in terms of their capabilities and effectiveness. After 2025, it will be necessary to continue modernizing Russian tanks.

"As part of further work to improve the security of the T-90M, it is proposed to equip the tank with the Arena-M active protection complex. In the frontal part of the hull, instead of the currently installed Relikt dynamic protection, the tank should receive dynamic protection similar to the T-14 Armata. - says the Institute of materials.
in addition, the side hulls will be reinforced hinged dynamic protection in tight containers improve the survivability of the tank are designed system of electromagnetic protection and a complex system of counteraction guidance antitank weapons, the same complex on the T-14, as well as automatic fire alarm system of repeated action. self-powered and a Lesochek-type jammer for fighting radio-controlled mines and explosive devices.
The T-90M Proryv tank is a deeply modernized version of the T-90 tank. The car received a fundamentally new turret, different from the serial one, and a more powerful engine. "Breakthrough" is equipped with a new multi-channel sight, which ensures the use of weapons at any time of the day. In addition, the ability to exchange data with other vehicles in real time has become one of the main features of the upgraded tank. The T-90M armor is equipped with a special anti-slip coating, similar to that used on the newest T-14 Armata. The first batch of T-90Ms entered the Russian Armed Forces this spring.

Because multilayer ERA isn't efficient or practical, adding huge weight & IA showed no interest.

No. Neither that nor the unproven experiment T-14 has any chance of seeing India next decade... No matter how much you advertise here.

Indian R&D as well as GSQR seems to be leaning on multiuse NERA for future.

Yes i thought weight was probably the issue with duplet as for T 14 we will see :) Latest govt move to end offset liability for Govt to govt deal for future is going to benefit none other than russians the most.

They thought... & later forgot.

LEDS-150 beat Arena & Trophy to get selected, but hasn't been installed in more than 10 years. I think they're just bolstering numbers now. Maybe an MLU will follow.
LEDS 150 is superior to arena series APS the same way bhio was superior to russian Anti aircraft systems, we all know what happened.
