GSL INKS CONTRACT WITH ARMY FOR SPECIALISED PATROL BOATS
Panaji: Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) on Thursday signed a contract to build 12 high-performance specialised patrol crafts for the Indian Army which will be utilised along the disputed waters at the Line of Actual Control, particularly Pangong Tso. The specialised boats will be delivered to the Indian Army by December 2021, said GSL officials.

While GSL has built warships and patrol vessels for the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard, construction of high-performance patrol vessels which are capable of performing at high altitudes will add to the defence public sector undertaking’s diverse capabilities.

Though GSL had earlier built over 170 glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) boats for the Union ministry of Home Affairs, the 12 boats for the Indian Army will be based on a new design and fitted with specialised equipment to operate in the harsh conditions up north of the country.

“These are composite hull boats and will have advanced sensor systems to help the Army fulfil its role,” said chairman and managing director B B Nagpal who was in New Delhi to ink the contract with the Indian Army.

GSL bagged the contract after emerging as the lowest bidder for the tender where public and private ship builders also participated. With skirmishes between Indian and Chinese soldiers increasing along the LAC which passes over water bodies and mountains, the Indian Army floated the tender to procure 12 specialised boats. “These craft will be among only few crafts in the world for such specialized operations,” GSL stated.

The DAC on July 2, 2020 approved BMP-2 Armament Upgrade for the IA. The upgrade wasn't listed among indigenously developed weapon systems so it could be the kit based Russian Berezhok upgrade that can be implemented at low cost and in short time.
The recent DAC approval was likely connected with the ongoing crises along the LAC. During DefExpo 2020, OFB exhibited an upgraded BMP-2 that lacked the punch of the Berezhok (below).
The upgrade, which requires minimal modifications of the tower, equips the BMP-2 with 3rd gen Kornet-E ATGM, 30-mm automatic grenade launcher (AG) AH-30, automatic target tracking and ballistic computer with the sensor system, and a television Panoramic sight for the commander.
Russia first pitched the Berezhok upgrade to India during DefExpo 2014. The DAC on July 8, 2017 nominated OFB and BEL to carry out (Make-in-India) midlife upgrade of 693 Russian-made BMP-II infantry combat vehicles. However, the total number of BMP-2s in service is around 1900.

Minister of State for Defence Shripad Naik handed over the 100,000th Bullet Proof Jacket (BPJ) to Army Chief General M M Naravane at a ceremony.

Bullet Proof Jacket being handed over to the Indian Army

The government will ensure that “the best of weapons and protective armour” are provided to the soldiers, Minister of State for Defence Shripad Naik said Wednesday.

Naik handed over the 100,000th Bullet Proof Jacket (BPJ) to Army Chief General M M Naravane at a ceremony here, the Defence Ministry said in a statement.
As per the statement, Naik said at the event that the Modi government has placed high emphasis on the operational safety of soldiers and it has honoured its commitment of protecting their “precious lives” while fighting the enemy.

Naik assured that “the government will ensure that our soldiers will be provided with the best of weapons and protective armour and such requirements will always remain uppermost in priority”.
He appreciated manufacturer company SMPP Pvt Ltd for supplying the one lakh BPJs four months ahead of the delivery schedule. The company already supplied 40000 bulletproof jackets in October 2019

The minister noted this BPJ is an indigenous product manufactured under the ‘Make in India’ initiative and the company is even exporting the product all over the world making India a global hub for supply of such defence items.
The minister said this BPJ has been appreciated by Indian soldiers who are using them on the borders and in countering insurgency.
These jackets have boron carbide ceramic, making it ultra-light in weight and providing a ‘360-degree protection’. The ceramic is one of the hardest materials to stop bullets and yet be lightweight. According to Ashish Kansal, executive director of SMPP, they are one of the five companies in the world to manufacture these jackets. In 2017, the ministry of defence had given SMPP the technology award for bulletproof jackets.

The company claims to preserve a sustainable ecosystem by also manufacturing ‘green packaging’ that can be used for protecting wine bottles and other spirits. This packaging is made out of the recycled pulp and used for automotive, medical, electronic, household, and office products.
First indigenous company
SMPP became one of the first private Indian companies to be given permission to manufacture ammunition in 1991 when the defence sector was closed to the private industry. It was given the defence/industrial licence from the defence ministry as an approved manufacturer of combustible cartridges, bulletproof vest, vehicle armour and aircraft armours.
Started in 1985 by Dr S.C. Kansal, an IIT-Bombay alumnus who received his Ph.D in chemical engineering, the company’s turnover in the last financial year was over Rs 100 crore.
Initially a domestic producer, SMPP now exports protection solutions to countries such as Germany, France, Australia, the UK, Russia and Israel.

It's that atrocity called Sarvatra Kavach or something, god awful design that should never have seen the light of day let alone inducted. Especially when we had much, MUCH better local options available.
Sarvatra kavach was an eyesore but according to the video SMPP look good and also protects the neck and groin.I think we should order more of these.
