Problem is not weight but volume though BM-21 launcher is almost 3 tons lighter. There is no issue with weight difference between Pinaka and Grad. Pinaka is slightly heavier, but not enough to be a problem for bridges. This is not an issue. DRDO developed 122mm ER rocket because Grad will serve for a while because their replacement by Pinaka will take a while.
Pinaka launcher is voluminous big and has trouble maneuvering.
I believe we shall have 6 pod launcher for the same or a new launcher entirely and not traditional Pinaka launcher.120km range Pinaka is not going to fit in our current launcher. 120 km range Pinaka 2 would be a 300mm MLRS.
We are moving towards smart warfare. Having accurate guided rounds (even though in less number) is more valuable than having entire salvo of unguided rounds. Best example is attack on Antonovsky bridge.Pinaka also has two pods and each pod holds four guided rockets or six unguided rockets. Compared with just six rockets in a single pod in HIMARS. So Pinaka packs more rockets on its launcher.
Targeting PRC's or Pakistani bunker with guided rounds will be more effective than launching entire salvo.
