I think it's the right choice, I personally have driven this baby, and it's much better in performance and practicality than it's competitors. This baby has no frills ride, but I dislike the fact that Tata didn't changed the chassis much in the civilian and army version. They just face lifted it. Nevertheless it's 4x4 capabilities are good, I hope that the army version should be equipped with defenses and plating. By the way that canister ... wrong move, a bullet can be a doom for the vehicle.

Your options ? ...................................
Ford SUV ,Nissan partol, Mitsubishi pajero, toyota land cruiser military version(even pakis use it ) old model ,all companies are here in india ,i know they will be expensive but as they are made in India why not tel them to submit tender.

these suv specially modified wil be much better option than TATA

Honestly their is no problem getting Merc or Audi SUV as GSV, But they die on Army patrol and cannot operate at higher altitudes ( Pajero now being bought back at fort William and used as VIP staff car ), Nissan send its sample but it was knocked out of tender due to inability to modify vehicle as per Army requirements, Ford didn't participated in the game from beginning ..

Land cruiser sound nice, But we might get AXE in steroids for that purpose ( LSV program )..

I think a reason behind favouring a domestic brand over foreign brand besides price advantage is, the former can be tweaked as per future needs of the army. For example a beefed up suspension setting or added armour beneath against future possible threats. Which might need RND and the foreign entity might not be interested to invest on such.

What about the Staff car:

I would like to see either one of these(armored):

Merc G wagon

Range rover sport.

With one of these as escort cars:

Fortuner

Land rover Defender

There is a big problem getting Mercedes and Audi,,Forget the cost of the vehicle most people i am sure here dont even know how much is the cost of servicing or insurance of such a vehicle.

And what kind of fuel they need to run.

Last time i checked the Army couldnt handle Pajero because of shitty fuel
